I recommend going there at 12 noon. We got there at 9:30am. We had to wait in this huge line to pay. There were 4 windows, but only 2 were in use. Not sure why they weren't all opened considering the long lines that were about an hour or more wait time. When we finally paid and go in, we had to wait in another line to watch a video about safety, do's and don'ts, etc. Finally we had to walk down a trail (about 10 minutes) to get to the bay and snorkel. After all that, I would have to say it was good, not excellent though.

We went March 29, took a tour with Hanauma bay snorkeling adventure as we heard the city bus can fill up,if you are not early enough. Cost $18 each, pick up at hotel, snorkeling gear included with price. Wish we had more time! Pick up ~7:30 at the hotel and you have to be back at the upper parking lot by 11:50. Another tour we had looked into has a shorter time frame, so if you book a tour looks for the longest time.
After the drive they transfer you to a smaller van near the entrance ( to do with park regulations not letting big tour buses in to limit the amount of people.) Then a 10 minute + wait for tickets (7.50). Then another wait for the film, the ticket tells you what time your show will be. (8:45 but it was later than that by the time we entered the theatre) then the walk down to the beach, we didn't get into the water until almost 10. If you sign a form after the movie you can skip it next time, but I saw almost nobody doing that as we all were so anxious to get to the water.
Anyways the snorkeling was wonderful for me ( first time snorkeler). We seemed to have to go out closer to the reef to see the multitide of fish. And the reef is close to the buoys signaling a strong current, so one has to be careful. It was windy and a bit cloudy, not hot yet, so we did get quite chilled in the water, came to the beach to warm up, and then it was just about time to get ready to go. We so wished we could stay longer and explore one of the other 3 sections of the bay.
I will come back here next time I am in Hawaii.I would love to try the bus by getting up early and catching an early bus. The #22 bus drops you off right at the same place as the tours, at the entrance. We saw 2 city buses as we were getting ready to leave, and about 22 people came off, no one was waiting to go on, so I think it can be doable. I would bring a lunch, something to drink, relax on the beach between swims and spend the afternoon if I could. I would also do this if I had a car for a few days, but this vacation we used our car rental day to drive the north shore earlier in the week.

Beautiful park where you can spend the whole day or just an afternoon snorkeling, tanning, or just swimming. Parking fills up fast, long line to get in, you have to watch a 9 minute, cheesy video about Hanauma Bay but it's all worth it! Many different types of fish and you can get really close.

Hanauma Bay can be great sometimes and not so on other times. It really depends on the weather and how many people are there. It is a beautiful beach and when the waters are clear and it is not windy, you can walk in the water waist deep and see fish. Or you can go over the reef and snokel for even better views. When they have a Shave Ice truck there, don't forget to get one.

Such a beautiful park! Nice beach to hang for the day, Nice museum and movie about the conservation efforts being made. But the best part is the snorkeling! Such a beautiful variety of fish! We even saw an eel scooting across the sea floor! I have never seen such colorful Parrot fish! A great day to be had!

Thank earnestxxxx
