After snorkeling other places on Oahu we realized how sad and damaged the coral at Hanauma Bay. Despite their efforts to educate the visitors on the care of the Bay millions of people come here a year with different snorkel experience levels it can a challenge not to stand let alone touch the coral. I will say that there are some really beautiful species of fish here that I hadn't seen elsewhere.
If you come here plan on also snorkeling somewhere else as well. I recommend the North Shore
parking $1 entry $7.50 each person

We took a taxi here from Ilikai. It will take about 40 min to get down to the beach from the parking lot. You need to buy a ticket and watch a video about ocean live. You can rent snorkel gear on the beach. The fins are uncomfortable, and gave most of us leg cramps. Glad we brought water shoes to wear. The beach is very beautiful; there are a lot of fish, all sizes and colors. Also those who didn’t want to snorkel, enjoyed time on the beach. Our taxi drive gave us his phone number and we call him to pick us up.

Hanauma Bay is beautiful. Lots of fish and some sea turtles you may see when you snorkel but the reef has been beaten up and is mostly rocky. They are trying hard to educate people about not hurting the reef so hope it bounces back but it will be a long time. The area is great for novice snorkelers for sure and I loved it and there were a ton of beautiful fish. Nice beach, lifeguards on site too. You can rent snorkeling equipment and a locker and its relatively inexpensive to go. Trolley is available to help people up and down.. an incredibly beautiful view and worth the visit.

We visited Hanauma bay 3 times to snorkel in Feb 2013.
We used different tour companies which charged $15-$18 for a return trip from Waikiki.
I prefer to hire the snorkelling equipment from the stall on the beach rather than using the tour companies' gear. I found the gear rented on the beach was better quality, though it adds $12 pp to the price!
We saw a huge variety of fish, some turtles and eels.
Get there early <8am to beat the crowds.

I think it was on the first day of the month that we finished our snorkelling, climbed to the top of the hill when the Tsunami alarm sounded which scared the %$!&* out of me! We soon discovered it was a monthly test!

As per all of the lonely planet tips & other blogs -get there before 9. Lockers available on the beach - shuttle buggies down to the beach from entrance area for oldies. Impressive beach & location. Coral damaged & quite unimpressive by Australian standards but fish are spectacular.
