“Small but nice”
Reviewed November 16, 2012

I really enjoyed this museum. I can't put my finger on any particular exhibits that really "made" the deal for me, it was the overall experience that I enjoyed. It was relaxing, and interesting, and a good atmosphere, and beautiful works of art.

“The place is bigger than it looks”
Reviewed September 22, 2012

This building or series of buildings is impressive since it looks much smaller from the outside. The exhibits are mainly contemporary and well curated. We saw one on tattoos and its role in Hawaiian culture and another on service people in Afghanistan and Iraq. I'm so glad we went. Great rainy day activity.

“Hawaii's Art”
Reviewed September 22, 2012

This is a gem of a contemporary art museum as it concentrates on art made in Hawaii from the 1970's on, with a few exceptions. Hawaii was one of the very first states to devote tax monies to creating a public art collection and so preserved the history and culture through its acquisitions. You'll some some of Hawaii's best contemporary artists represented here. The galleries change often, so every trip, you need to stop by and check out what's on view. Great Saturday programs for kids with hands on activities. And it FREE! Located in the historic downtown area, across from the Capitol and Iolani Palace and a short walk to Mission Houses. The great cafe is being closed because of a rental issues...which is very sad...it made for a wonderful day and lunch stop. On First Fridays, check out the concerts on the lawn...an experience you won't want to miss.

We walked through but did not have a lot of time. Unique art displays and very nice grounds. Across the street from the Capitol and the Palace.
