Travelled here twice on my stay in honolulu, got the number 5 bus and got off on the last stop. Paid a donation ($5) to have a guided tour, which was very worth it. Even though the first time it rained for 2 hours!!.

Be prepared for bugs, though i didnt get bitten and to get wet!!! Umbrellas are provided.

Overall, very nice place to visit and get away from the crowds at Waikiki

Thank Daniellejohnson

This place is amazingly beautiful and if you have a car, quite easy to reach. It's somewhat like walking thru a tropical jungle with the most wonderful flora & fauna. Be aware this is not your touristy, well manicured garden. Shoes for walking are recommended and with all the rain it can be somewhat muddy /slippy. Not good maybe for people with disabilities or who are unsteady on their feet.

The flowers in these gardens were absolutely spectacular!! And there was virtually no one else around!

This place is amazing! We had so much fun walking around and learning about different tropical plants. Employees were very kind and extremely knowledgeable. This stop was also recommended to us, and we were glad we went. Need something free to do for a change in Honolulu? Check out Lyon Arboretum! And then stop in Manoa at the little cafe accross from Safeway (can't remember the name, but great lunches)

My husband and I are gardeners and have visited a lot of public and private gardens primarily in the Northwest.

The sheer size and variety here is outstanding. We intended to do a self- guided tour but accepted the offer for a tour led by one of their volunteers. For an additional $10 donation we got a 90 minute guided walk with Lois. This was well worth it. Someone had canceled at the last minute. You otherwise need to reserve in advance.

Contrary to one of the posts, most of the plants and trees are labeled. The people at the Visitors Center are there to help you if you have any questions about plant I.d. As with most public gardens, they operate on the lean side. They have only two full-time staff with additional help from volunteers.

This was an exceptional garden I would encourage all visitors to Oahu to visit it.
