Our second trip to Waikiki was nice but will be our last. Like any tourist area you expect to get hit in the wallet but Waikiki seems to be the most shameless. Taxes on your taxes seems pretty common. Pay for a beach umbrella at the hotel, pay for snorkeling gear (no loaners), pay a resort fee (for stuff that means nothing) pay $5 for a coffee...you get hit everywhere. For such a great location it's a shame that they stick a big target on you as soon as you get through customs. There are too many better beach locations offering much better value & quality for us to go back to Waikiki.

Waikiki beach is what it is, beautiful, crowded, blue waters. Some people love it, some hate it. If you want busy, go there, if not then go over to Maui and go to Big Beach down in Wailea, you are mostly there alone or very few people. In this world there is something for everybody.
However, if yo do decide to go to Waikiki beach then you do have to expect crowds, that is just the way it is.

Surfing here is a must for beginners. I went for the first time and loved the experience - I was even able to get up several times and ride the waves!

Stop by Dukes for their amazing burgers and hula pie too.

It is hard to explain the beach itself is beautiful the surrounding hotels, the chic restaurants and designer shops are wonderful but the overcrowded strip is challenging to the senses. When I think of Hawaii, I think of volcanoes, island breezes, and nature. However, I don't think of overcrowding, traffic jams and the abundance of homeless people sleeping on the street. The north shore of Oahu is much nicer and more in line with my vision of what an island paradise should be. But in my opinion if traveling to Hawaii and want to experience true beauty choose another island.

Each end of the beach is different, with the busy bit in the middle, outside the PINK hotel. Outside the Pacific Beach Hotel is excellent swimming from babies to 90 year olds. Watch or join in the PUA Yoga on a surf board. Be brave and learn how to Paddle Board, practise snorkeling. Watch out for your garbage as the changing tides will take out your plastic cups etc. and feed the unsuspecting sea life and turtles. We picked up garbage at the end of the day and found everything from plastic cups to shoe laces. Be a fish or a turtle and appreciate why you are here.
Rent a couple of comfy blue loungers, complete with table, good sized umbrella for 50 dollars a day outside the Outrigger on the Reef. Look for Bruno and say those Canadians sent you! Watch out for the heat of the day if you have just arrived as you can cook to a crisp quickly. The South End of Waikiki, for us was more of a beach than the North end for swimming. Maybe because there were life guards. Take drinks, snacks, and a good book if you don't have kids. For EVERYONE, even the ones that should know better about the wrinkles that you can get from the sun drying suntans.
