I live in Waikiki, a block from this beach. We go all the time and swim in "the ponds", the walled off areas perfect for non-swimmers, kids and folks who don't want to be in over their heads. The water is OK, could be cleaner, lots of sunscreen on the surface. Over the wall is clean water, fairly shallow conditions and lots of rocks. Down by the Moana Surfrider and Royal Hawaiian Hotel, the beaches are really nice, great for body surfing, surfing lessons, etc. The beaches in Waikiki are always busy with lots to see! If you want cleaner more peaceful beaches, head out of town.

A great, iconic beach, even though it's sometimes so crowded you can hardly see the sand. Great for people watching, and eaves-dropping on international conversations. Fabulous sunsets, lined with hotels where you can grab a cold drink or a bite to eat. Water is clean and so is the beach.

This popular, historic beach area is lovely and crowded. Unfortunately there are a lot of nasty smokers who litter and pollute. Once the NO SMOKING ON THE BEACH law is in effect, this will be a pristine place to hang out! Yay! There are surf rentals as well as SUP, paddle boats rentals. Many fun festivals, competitions and exhibits are here too.

Waikiki Beach may be extremely well known, but it disappointed on many levels. The sand is extremely shallow on the beach, there are plenty of submerged rocks on which to stub your toes when you go in for a swim, the beach is so crowded it is difficult to find a space on which to place your towel, high levels of thefts occur on the beach and there are beggars everywhere. Aesthetically the beach with Diamond Head in the background looks spectacular, but the beach itself is over-rated. Well worth a visit but don't expect Shangra-la.

I had to visit the beach I hear so much about on TV and what is seen in the movies. Beach is pretty and you have a beautiful view of Diamond Head, the ocean, rentals for all your beach needs and experieinces, many excellent resturants right off the beach, and perfect view of beautiful sunsets! Downside: crowded, swimming is difficult with all the people on the stand up paddle boarding, many resorts/hotels right there with access to the beach- be careful where you put your stuff, it could be in the walk way of a resort access, try to get away from the sounds for the cars on the main streets off the beach for relaxation. Nice fishing off the lava rock, and futher down, opposite from Diamond Head, is the military area where beach volleyball takes place :-)
