We like to dance and we often find that you can get some decent dancing space if you get to a club early. As we are in our early sixties it also spares us from the circles of drunken women that usually dominate dance floors later in the evening. We decided to check out Rumours, as it was near our hotel and it opened early. Got there at about 7 p.m. to find the place packed and an average sized dance floor with virtually no space available.
It was like going back in time. Everyone was dancing like we used to dance in the 70’s. Unlike most places these days, men actually were dancing, mainly with their feet nailed to the floor and moving their arms back and forth like they were playing trains but not going anywhere. Some of the women also do this, but others kick up their heels and wave their hands and wiggle their behinds. When a slow number comes on they fall into each others arms and sway, like environmentalists hugging a tree.
If you want to dance, just find a little space and stick to it. No one knows about moving round a dance floor, even for slow numbers. Be prepared for elbows. Be prepared for women who give you dirty looks if you know how to dance with any kind of ability.
To make it more bizarre they were playing and showing videos of disco music from the 70’s and 80’s, and some of the guests were dancing solo in cages above the dance floor. Mainly women, but some men took turns in the cages.
My impression was that almost everyone was local and regular, and we got some very unfriendly looks and comments, both on and off the dance floor.
