It felt a bit like I was sleeping in a tiny dorm. Basically everyone who books within an "unknown" amount of time can get a room for 80$/night. My advice to you is to go on Priceline and bid for a proper 3 star hotel where for 5$ more I got TWO beds, coffee/tea, fridge, a washroom I could comfortably fit into, unlimited calls from my hotel, enough lighting to see things in the dark, and a pool to swim in. Most of their rooms are really small, but some of the rooms are slightly larger. A lot of people review this place and say it's "affordable" because they haven't shopped around and didn't end up staying in a nearby hotel that gives you MUCH better bang for your buck.
I wish the rest of my family had the chance to write this review.

Hannah, I am sort that you were so dissatisfied with your stay at Stay Waikiki. At our hotel, we are trying to offer something fresh and interesting...more hip and youthful than other tired, stodgy hotels in the area that primarily cater to tour groups. Believe me, we get just as many guests who have checked out from some of these budget hotels because of cleanliness or location issues.

I don't know which room you rented (your review didn't say) but it is true that we do have a few one-bed rooms for those who are visiting Waikiki on a strict budget. Having said that, we also offer rooms with two beds for just a few dollars more. We actually do offer some of the other amenities that you refer to in your review but, in some cases, they must be requested (except for the pool...that would be more difficult to accommodate).

At Stay Waikiki, we have a wide range of room sizes and types from which to choose. In the future (and for all future guests), please feel free to ask for a very detailed room description when you make your reservation (or when you check into our hotel). We want to meet your expectations as completely as possible and, perhaps, even offer an upgrade if one is available.

I really did want to like this place--the descriptions of the quirky decor, great location, and the fact that it was newly renovated all were good selling points.

And there were some things to like: very friendly staff, the location immediately across from the Hyatt's transportation center, the proximity to Waikiki beach and attractions, and the fact that many aspects of the room had been redone: new floors, paint, grout, molding, furniture, and a comfortable bed.

Unfortunately there were also things not to like: extremely poor room lighting, no chair or desk in room, a bathroom faucet that was very difficult to turn on, noise coming through louvered glass windows (especially the end next to Koa Avenue), deadbolts that did not work (and in fact trapped us in the room for several minutes), lanai/balcony door locks that didn't work, and finally cockroaches (a big one in the tub and a small one running across the desk right in reception). We experienced three rooms over 2 stays, separated by a week. We coincidentally got one of the same rooms from our first visit on our second stay, and none of the defects we reported at the end of the first visit had been fixed--especially the non-functioning deadbolt lock.

If the management will improve room lighting and fix all the door locks I would at least be able to recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms on Koa Avenue are less quiet--noise from the street comes through the louvers

Thanks for taking the time to write a review of our hotel. Believe it or not, I really do value EVERY review – good or bad – that we receive. In fact, a review that presents helpful criticism is even more valuable to us than the occasional pat on the back from a happy customer (although those are nice too). Of course, I was happy to hear the positive comments in your review, but I want to focus on some of your other comments in my response.

Lighting. First of all, even though we have only been open since October, we quickly came to realize that we needed to add some lighting in our guestrooms, especially the larger ones. This problem is being addressed.

Desks and Chairs. Second, we are also working on adding desk and chair sets to those rooms that do not yet have them. (For future guests, please request this when you make your reservation if this feature is important to you).

Noise Issues. It is true that the rooms closest to Koa Avenue (we call them the “01” rooms) are noisier than the others. For those of you who will be making future reservations, please feel free to ask for a room closer to Prince Edward Street…our quietest rooms.

Door Locks. We have become aware of some lock issues that we were having in approximately five or six of our guestrooms. These have been attended to. I am very sorry that you were so inconvenienced in this respect.

Bugs. Please know that we maintain a constant and extensive maintenance program with respect to pest control at this hotel. Having said that, Honolulu is most definitely located in the tropics and all of the hotels in the islands must undertake fairly extreme measures to insure that unwanted non-paying guests don’t wander into the hotel…especially the guestrooms. (I can’t speak for other hotels but, for us, this isn’t a cleanliness issue. As you can see from most of the reviews of our hotel, our cleanliness is praised pretty consistently). We will continue every effort to insure that – if one of these critters happens to blow in on a tropical breeze – they will be evicted as quickly as possible!

Tom, I don’t know if you will be returning to Hawaii soon, so I don’t know how helpful a free night at the hotel would be. However, if you will contact me through the hotel – with your reservation details – I would like to offer you something to compensate you for your inconvenience.

I was just looking for a place to sleep for a night while on business. At starting rates at $79/nite, this newly renovated hotel was perfect. This clean, cute, boutique-like hotel has friendly and helpful service. It's located a short walk to the beach and surrounding shopping and restaurants. My overall rating would be higher if the renovation was complete. I'll be sure to return.

Room Tip: Check with the front desk to see the room size if it's available.
