“A decent choice at the right price”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2012

We stayed at the Ohana Waikiki Malia for 10 nights in August 2012. We were pleasantly surprised that we were given a high floor ocean facing room at check-in. After exploring the hotel, I would not have been happy with a lower floor, or a room on the other side of the building that faced the neighboring hotel. We came into this trip with modest expectations having stayed at the Sheraton Resort on our last trip to Waikiki, but we found this hotel adequate given our luck in getting a good room. If you are looking for an inexpensive hotel and get a good price, this hotel is definitely worth a look. You can tell that the Ohana Malia is an older building that has been upgraded in a piecemeal fashion, and there's no hiding the lipstick on the pig with ice machines on only 2 floors and three different sets of elevators that only go to select floors. Here is a list of the pros and cons of the hotel that we found during our stay:

Pros:
- Good hotel location only a 5 minute walk to the beach and in the heart of Waikiki shopping and dining.
- Good housekeeping and friendly staff
- Pleasant view from our room
- Rooms were furnished in keeping with a 3 star hotel
- Excellent price for a Waikiki central hotel

Cons:
- Poor amenities with no on-site gym, a minuscule plunge pool, and no comfortable common areas
- Scary $20 parking garage if you rent a large vehicle or are not a good driver
- Archaic elevator system that requires you to go down to the lobby and get in a different elevator to get to the parking and/or laundry room
- Over half of the rooms in the hotel have a view directly into a neighboring building 40 feet away.
- Lots of noisy Waikiki bars nearby, and a bar/club in the base of the hotel (could be a pro too I suppose, but not if you value quiet while you sleep)
- Clearly a hotel that has been upgraded from a 2.5 star to a 3 star, but still has the bones of a 2.5 star

Room Tip: Try to get a higher floor room in the tower facing towards Waikiki Beach.

Location was perfect, your right in the middle of Waikiki and can walk to everything, staff was cordial and accomodating, rooms were clean and well maintained, overall a very good experience.
There is no fitness center but does have a jacuzzi and pool, although pool is a tad bit small. then again everything in Waikiki has to be smaller because of lack of space.

Looking for a lower cost option in the Waikiki area, we booked 6 nights at the Ohana Waikiki Malia through Donna Bender, who is an Outrigger Ohana Hospitality Specialist. We had a nice suite of rooms with kitchenette and twin day beds in addition to the bedroom. Tons of eating places and shopping within blocks, a main bus/trolley line at our door, and the beach only two long blocks away made this a great location. No great view from our room, but the price was worth it! Front desk staff were great. A parking space in the limited garage is not guaranteed but we were able to get one the two nights we rented a car.

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floors are quieter.

First impression ( lobby) .......... clean and welcoming!

My husband and I continually return to this particular hotel. It is walking distance to food and entertainment, there's a pizza joint that's not to bad down stairs along with an ihop.

Front desk associate have so much aloha and smiles. No bad experience from our many stays.

Security is 100%, on high volumes a room key is mandatory to go up and down in elevators as well as in the lobby.

Swimming pool is very small so for those looking to have pool time, not the place to go.

The only thing we would like to see improved is their rooms, although they are spacious the larger older room with two bedroom areas needs immediate attention.

Hope this helps a lot of you looking for a good nights in Hawaii!

Mahalo!

We had a 4 day stopover in Honolulu on our way to Canada in August 2012. This is a great hotel for anyone looking for reasonably priced accommodation. The suite was clean andcomfortable with a kitchenette where we could prepare meals. It is just a short walk to the main shopping strip and another block to the beach. There is an IHOP diner and a bar next door and three ABC stores within 1 block of the hotel (one diagonally across the street from the hotel) where supplies could be purchased. The staff weree very helpful. The only thing I would like to see is a kettle to boil water for Tea.

We stayed twice during July, 2012. No useful restaurant in-house, but plenty in the neighborhood, and it's just one block back from the entire Waikiki "strip." Rooms are clean and functional, staff are excellent. I'd want something fancier if I planned to spend lots of time in my room, but that's not the point of visiting Hawaii.

Room Tip: As usual, lower floors are noisier.

My partner and I spent six nights here in early August 2012. I was under no illusion - I knew the pool was small and basic, but as first time visitors to Hawaii I knew we'd be out and about most of the time and not wasting time in the hotel - all I wanted was a nice, clean room in a good location at a decent price (via Expedia) and that is what I got! The location was fine - walking distance to everything (I didn't notice the problems with pimps & hookers that another reviewer refers to!), the reception staff were all friendly and helpful with taxis and the like, as were the activty desk staff. Free wi-fi in the lobby which is handy. We arrived after an overnight flight long before check in time, of course our room wasn't ready but they offered an upgrade to an ocean view room for an extra $20 per night, which we gladly took....made our first day much more bearable. Overall, I'd definately stay here again.
