“Bargain in Honolulu”
Reviewed January 3, 2010

My spouse and I stayed at the Ilikai for 3 nights just before Christmas. This was booked through Expedia, and the total rate, including taxes and fees was less than $300 Cdn. For that, we got an ocean view room on the 25th floor at a busy holiday period.

The room itself was simple, but certainly adequate. The building dates from the 60’s, but in general seemed well maintained. When it was built, the ocean view would have been exceptional, but much of the view is now cut off by the towers of the Hilton next door. Every room at the Ilikai enjoys an ample balcony, and in our case, the height was enough to give us a mild case of vertigo. It’s a long way down.

The bed was very comfortable, and the air conditioner work well. The housekeeping was good, although the top of the armoire contained a business card, some change and a lot of dust. Included in the rate is a continental breakfast. This consists of a bagel or danish, yoghurt or cereal, and a basic fruit selection. While nothing fancy, the lines were not long, and it got us started at least. It may not measure up to an Embassy Suites, but it was also less crowded, and given what we were paying, we were not complaining.

The location is actually pretty good. As it is on the edge of Waikiki, access by car to and from the airport was a snap. We had no problem walking to places further along. We ate one night at a restaurant in the Hilton, and another at a thai restaurant, called Keo’s close by. This was very good, and fairly reasonably priced. The only difficulty with the location was that a decent cup of coffee was a fair distance away. By the way, we paid $1 more at the Starbucks located in the Hilton complex, as compared to the one in Outrigger not far away.

As far as negatives are concerned, we paid $18 per day for parking, which is valet only. On the plus side, the valets had the car out in no time at all. I understand it may be cheaper to park at the adjacent marina, but we didn’t investigate. Also, it is a bit of a ghost town down on the ground floor, but hopefully someone will use some of the empty space to put in a Starbucks, or maybe Tim Horton’s. Finally, the pool area is small, but with the ocean right there, we didn’t use it at all. It does have the advantage of being an actual swimming pool, with reserved times for fitness swimming in the morning.

If you are going to be going to Waikiki, don’t mind a location outside of the centre, and want value, the Ilikai has a lot to offer.

My wife and I stayed in the Ilikai Appartments and found their cleanliness and location ideal. Away from Waikiki they are quieter and still only 10 minutes walk to Wakiki and 5 minutes to Ala Moana Shopping Centre. Car parking in the public parking area near the lagoon and yatch harbour is cheap and convenient. The adjacent lagoon was more preferable to the crowded Waikiki for swimming , relaxing and sun bathing. Buy a $1-99 float from the ABC shop and you are in Heaven!!

If you don't mind fabulous walks along the gorgeous beach to get to downtown Waikiki the attractively priced Ilikai Hotel & Suites is for you! The hotel's public rooms and outdoor spaces were beautifully decorated for Christmas. Breakfast and Dinner Buffets were available. The building is VERY CLEAN. The studio condo apartments are a great size for two however up to 2 additional people may be accommodated on the fold out couch.
Sadly owners appear to be letting their recently renovated suits deteriorate. Wall paper is coming away from walls and around the kitchen island. We noticed this problem when we stayed here last March 2009 but nothing has been done to correct the problem. Another issue is drawer space. There really isn't any. It/s ok you make do however more though needs to be given to clothes storage within the condo. The electronic safe remains in the closet taking up valuable storage space even though it has been disabled for guests renting the accommodation.
We hope owners move quickly to correct the small issues before they become major reasons visitors begin ignoring the Ilikai.

Ilikai is a very good hotel, it has this feel and look of glamorous 1950's. Large and clean rooms and great location are the advantages very few can compare to. Service was laid back in true Aloha manner.

This was our first trip to Hawaii. It way my wife and I with our 2 daughters (age 6 and 2). I had not idea which was the best area to stay when I booked, but found a great deal on the Ilikay that we could not resist. We stayed in the Oceanview room with Full Kitchen. This room was huge. It was perfect for us and gave ample of room for the kids to play around. The view was just awsesome overlooking the lagoon and the ocean. The kitchen was very helpful in cutting down costs as we were able to alternate cooking lunches and dinners with going out to restaurants or mall food courts. This hotel we found was very centrally located. It was just off the main busy strip (10 min walk). It had everything you need close by (2 ABC store's 1min walk and McDonald's accross the street) It was a 5-7 min walk to the beach (by the time you got through the hotel and down the ramp and walk around the lagoon). If you walk down the street 10-15 min you can easily get to the Ala Moana beach park, which is great for kids as its a calm water beach. This hotel was also less than 10 min walk to the biggest shopping mall in the area (Ala Moana shopping center?) which had a huge food court.
The free breakfast was decent and good excuse to get us out of the room earlier to start the day.
All in all a great hotel if you only need limited services. If you are high maintenance then you may want to look at full service 5 star hotel. This was great for what we needed and would definitely recommend.

This review is for a condo in the Ilikai, not the hotel. We stayed in unit 1802 and the website we used had photos of the unit, which is nicely updated and beautiful. We had an excellent view of the harbor and city lights along the shore, not toward Waikiki but the other direction. Our unit and lanai were very private - no one could really see in, which is not true of most of the units. We were a 7 minute walk from Ala Moana, we were able to find street parking every night (but we were resourceful and careful), we were a 10 minute walk along the beach to the center of Waikiki. The sliding doors of the unit open wide and there is a nice wide lanai so the unit feels very open. We enjoyed watching the sun set every night, and watching the outrigger canoes and sailboats. If you are a swimmer, there is a lagoon with a lifeguard at the tip of the adjacent park and the area is sheltered and perfect for fitness/lap swims. The unit itself is nicely appointed, although there is virtually no storage for clothes so although we are typically very neat it looked like a small clothing factory exploded during our stay as there is only one drawer, in the nightstand, and a small closet with limited space. But the kitchen was nice (granite and stainless) and the bathroom was nice (granite and instant hot water). Everything seemed very clean. One night it rained so we got a bottle of wine and (we are really not people who do this ever, much less when we travel) a California Pizza Kitchen frozen pizza from the ABC store across the street and stayed in and watched a movie on the big flat screen TV - and we actually had a very nice evening. We thought the unit was a great value, and that the critiques of the building were overblown. I was expecting it to be run down from the reviews, but the building was quite nice. There are water features at the entry, and nice big open well-appointed lobby (not 5 star luxurious, but very very nice) and the carpet in all the hallways looked brand new. The building looked well-maintained which I did not expect. I highly recommend the Ilikai, especially if you get the right unit. I would not waste time looking for another place to stay (and I am research-crazy when I travel) if I were to return. I do not, however, recommend the restaurant on the top floor for happy hour. Really really bad attitude, plus view of the nearby highrises, not the sunset, from the bar area.

We liked it. Great location, nice big rooms, within walking distance of lots of great places. You can pay more and get more next door but this was great for the money. From our lanai on the 25th floor we had a view of Diamond Head and the beach, watched surfers, outrigger canoes in the surf, and the big luau next door. Included breakfast of danish, fresh fruit, yogurt, and coffee was nice but for good coffee there is a starbucks next door. Be sure to budget some extra for valet parking but it was also convenient. Overall a great experience.
