“awesome view and great workout”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 11, 2013

The climb is steep but it is a relatively short hike. It took me around 40 minutes to go up and 30 minutes to come down. Would recommend one to carry some water and/or sports drink. I saw many people carrying bottles in hand though it is better to have a small backpack in order to maintain good stability.

The view from the top was awesome. I got my best pictures in Honolulu from there.

“What a great workout, but take water!”

The path is a little unstable in places, but the view is breathtaking no matter how far up you make it.

“A steep climb but worth the view”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 4, 2013

Need shoes with good tread because it's slippery when you come down. Over 1,000 steps to the top. There is a section where the dirt has washed away, about 100 yards, that you basically climb up in mid air. My 9 year old and I followed a Local and walked up the path around to the right. The steps in the air were too wide for his legs. Bring water as it gets hot. This used to be some kind of military look out in WWII. And the tracks very built not for a funicular, but for transport of supplies to the top. The view is incredible. Once at the top, go to the other side of the cement structure for the incredible view of the East side of Oahu. From the top, you can also see Hanauma Bay.

Lots of Locals come here for exercise. Coming down, be careful of the lose soil on the cement steps. Very slippery.

There are restrooms in the park at the base and also a playground.

“You gotta do this!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 2, 2013

My kids, age 16 and 18, husband and I (49) did this hike and it was very rewarding. It was a personal goal to get to the top! DEFINITELY go early. We started about 0520 to be at the top for sunrise. I would not start much later.
Bring water--we each had one water bottle which was ok but 2 might have been better.
It is definitely a leg and cardio work out! Take your time. I briefly rested about every 20 stairs and it took us about 50 minutes to get to the top.
The views especially with the sun coming up were awesome! Cliff drop offs all around. '
The story from WW2 of the track and bunkers at the top is really interesting and there are many remnants of the time. Unfortunately it has not been kept up and rude people leave trash and have put graffiti on the concrete.
Take your time getting back down. We side-stepped slow and steady, allowing people coming up to pass by us.
To get there by GPS you type in Koko Head District Park. Make sure you go thru the neighborhood Hawaii Kai which is weird and the trail head is behind a park.
Good Luck!!
