“Bring Water, No your abilities, be honest with yourself”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2012

This is not for everyone! The amount of people I saw bum sliding down the trail, and just generally looking like they were going to throw up, pass out or have a heart attack were numerous. Wear a hat, bring lots of water and if not in great shape take your time.
It is not far, but it is railway tie stairs (big steps) and it is a major incline. This will get your heart pumping for sure! The views from the very top are spectacular you can see some of the other islands in the distance. Next time we will do it and then take the ridge trail down to the beaches...

“Not an easy hike, but worth it!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2012

We did this not realizing what we got into until we got there. Out of 8 of us, only 5 of us made it to the top. The trail is an old railroad track used in WWII, and while it formed steps, the steps were uneven and not maintained. Part of the track is suspended, but you can go around it. Locals were doing this running up and down, 2 guys even carrying cinder blocks. I made it to the top, but it took a while and I stopped 20+ times. The view at the top is the best view we saw on Hawaii. You can walk around to the other side and see even more of the island too. The hike down isn't easy either, legs were shaking not even half way down, and part of the track was too steep so we crab walked. Wear good shoes, bring water, and sunscreen. Extremely difficult, but also very satisfying when you get to the top!

“Tough but rewarding hike!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2012

When they say "1048 steps" they mean railroad ties and rails--2 to 3 feet apart, not regular steps! It is VERY challenging but the view from the top is out of this world! I wanted to celebrate a BIG birthday in a positive, active way and chose to go to the top of Koko Head--I felt excited but old by the time I reached the bottom! This is not a hike for an old, out of shape person! The people climbing up and going down were extremely pleasant, kind, and supportive! It was a beautiful day, sunny, warm, and really a challenge that I wanted to take. One person told us that the climb going up is tough on the heart and going down was tough on the legs and they were absolutely right! It is a lot of physical work but definitely worth it! Glad I did it but don't think I'll do it again! It's scratched off my "bucket list"! :)

“Strenuous but well worth it”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2012

Its walk able from Waikiki so you don't have to pay for a tour-about 3 miles. The crater itself is interesting but not a lot of information . The views are great but go early to avoid the crowds and the heat
