The views from the top of Koko Crater are second to none and are far superior to the nearby and more famous neighbour of Diamond Head.

However, the climb is not for the faint-hearted. It is along an old military railway line up the side of the crater. The climb is almost vertical in places and is extremely hard work especially in the heat.

Take plenty of water, eat lots of carbs before you go and don't forget your camera!

Bus number #22 stops opposite. Get off the bus just before Hanauma bay (except on a Tuesday).

Nearby Hawaii Kai is at the bottom so you can get a (well deserved) coffee or meal once you get back down.

Hiking this trail is definitely an experience. It is not a leisurely hike, but still and enjoyable one. The views are magnificent, and you will get quite a workout. Definitely bring water. The bridge in the middle can be a bit intimidating. There is a trail to go around it if you wish.

This is an astonishing walk, obviously better to do earlier or later in the day when it's not hot, but we did it at midday! The toilets in the car park are dire, but you should consider going before you walk as it takes longer than you think to go up and down. Park as far into the car park as you can, go up the slope and then follow the path to the steps, you can go up the road and round on the right. The trail is an old track of railway sleepers, it is relatively gently sloping at the bottom, getting steeper, and then there is a bridge which adds a new dimension to the fear factor. It then gets incredibly steep and numerous stops are required. Surely it is not surprising to think you need fluids, we went through a quart, but numerous people with no fluids!? A great relief on getting to the top, what an achievement, the views are stunning, if you follow the dusty trail round and then up to what looks like an old helicopter landing pad. This is so much better than diamond head - if you are fit enough to do it. There probably should be a warning at the bottom. When we were descending, some poor chap became unwell, the firemen came and he was airlifted off. They were incredibly professional and a credit. Apparently they are there at least once a week! However, surely it was not necessary to take photos of his rescue.... Trail took us an exhausting 2 hours But was very rewarding

Killer views, killer cardio, killed my quads!!! We did a sunrise hike for this one. Climbed to the top, took photos, then hiked the entire rim of the crater! Bring plenty of water for this one!!
