“Fun hike, great sunrise view”
Reviewed February 21, 2012

Challenging, fun, great views. Bring a flashlight when hiking in the morning. It's "only" 1,048 steps.

“Wow...awesome workout and worth the hard work!”
Reviewed February 17, 2012

Hiked Koko Head as a challenge in Jan., and it sure was! Paused along the way to rest and just breathe in the beauty of the view. My 6th time to O'ahu and try to do something different each time. This was super...legs were sore for two days after! It is not a climb for those not prepared for a very hard workout, but those who make it, you can stare at the views forever...Can't wait to do it again. Mahalo Koko Head! Your friends, Lopaka, brother of Lopaka, and Kepi.

“Strenuous, but not to be missed”
Reviewed February 17, 2012

To get to Koko Crater, take the bus that also goes to Hanauma Bay. From where you get off the bus, you must walk about 3/4 mile down a road to the trailhead, which is close to the baseball diamonds. Koko Crater is 1200', and the trail has no switchbacks. I am an experienced hiker, but this was the most strenous hike I have ever done. It is a totally awesome experience. You are hiking straight up old tram tracks that are still in place from the days when it was used by the military to haul supplies to the top of the crater. All the track and railroad ties are still there. A good part of it is likely at a 40 degree angle going up. Take water or sports drinks, and take a break when you need it. At the top you can see Hanauma Bay, so when you come down from Koko Crater, just cross the road over to see Hanauma Bay, viewable from the general visitors area for free, or $7 to go onto the beach. Also from the top of Koko Crater you can see the skyscrapers of Waikiki Beach area about 8 miles away, and can also see Diamond Head.

“Don't attempt to climb Koko Head crater in sandals!”
Reviewed February 16, 2012

Koko Head crater is situated adjacent to Hanuama Bay and Hawaii Kai, so easily reached by The Bus from Waikiki.
No entry fee, but a very steep climb. I made it to the top wearing sandals ... I DO NOT recommend you try the same.
The views from the top are stunning ... Koko Marina, Hawaii Kai, Hanuama Bay and in the distance Diamond Head and Waikiki.
Thoroughly recommended, but only if you're relatively fit!
Another tip: try and choose a cloudy day.
