“Stylish boutique in a good spot”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 8, 2014

You feel at home right from the start. Check in is personal and soon all staff knows you. Rooms are all new - white, clean with some wood - like you are still on the beach. We had a room on the 8th floor - (changed to one with a terrasse = half of the experience) - the view to the pools + ocean was superb. Pool area - all with wood is very stylish and the restaurants really good. We had a la carte breakfast and also had dinner at the Japanese restaurant - both superb, but not cheap (Note: the Japanese food is spicy) The hotel is close to the Ala Moana shopping Center (walk) and on the far North of Waikiki Beach. This is a big plus - you have the beach- not crowded and coming back you feel like coming home. When seeing the Hilton Hawaiian Village with 4-5 Towers down the beach - you almost feel sorry for the people living there.

The Modern is super place. Do get a room with a balcony on the un-even numbers side (to the South)..

It took me a while to find a hotel to stay in Honolulu and I'm so happy I stayed at the Modern. The hotel is new and renovated and used to be part of the Ilikai Hotel (I was told by a local friend)

I arrived at 9am at the hotel, way before check-in time, but I was able to use the shower and change room in the Spa. Front Desk said they'd assign a room for me as early as possible since the hotel was full, but I decided to walk to Ala Moana shops whilst waiting for my room to be ready. After I got back to the hotel around lunch time, I realised they had sent me an email at 10.30am already to say my room was ready!

I booked a partial ocean view room which directly looks onto the back of the condo on the opposite side of the road, but as it was far enough away, it didn't bother me very much. The room has a view of the marine and ocean from the balcony. The room was a good size, and bathroom was modern (shower only) with some really nice smelling Lather brand hotel toiletries.

I had a massage in the Spa which was great. There are 2 pools (one is an adult only pool by the patio) but even though they are not huge, they don't get very crowded, like the bigger hotels along Waikiki which you can see when you walk past them.

I had lunch at Morimoto, which was a disappointment. The service was kind of lacklustre and the sushi was average. Breakfast on the Patio was great though along with the service.

The idea of the Study is just brilliant. Separated by a movable bookshelf, complimentary coffee/tea in the mornings and at night it turns into a bar area. It's great to be able to come back at night and be able to get a drink before heading back to the room.

The hotel is great and I'd definitely come back. It may not be right in the centre of Waikiki, but it is away from the hustle bustle of Waikiki which makes the stay more relaxed. You can walk to Waikiki beach from the Modern and you can also walk to Ala Moana shops. There is a convenience store just opposite the hotel too.

Room Tip: Higher floors are probably quieter.

I just had the one night at The Modern before flying home the next day. The hotel is very chic and the service very good. The pool area and poolside bar are nice, and the Japanese restaurant in-house is highly rated. My only gripe is with the very slow lifts. I would consider staying at the Modern when next in Honolulu.

The Modern stands out as a little calm enclave amidst the chaos of Waikiki. The staff give exceptional service and pay attention to the small details, making a stay at the Modern a true holiday. Alhough it is not beachfront-the views over the marina are interesting, and the beach is only a slow walk away...

Room Tip: With a terrace, ocean view or Ocean front OR the one bedroom suites with two terraces (Corner suites...

Beautiful on the inside and the out - The Modern Hotel is a pleasure to stay at. The lobby is gorgeous and has a floor to celing bookshelf which they open up in the mornings for complimentary tea and coffee and by night its a hip little bar called The Study -which has a great selection of cocktails that I can highly recommend. The rooms are very spacious - we had two double beds in our room and didn't feel like we were tripping over ourselves, the beds are amazing and you'll be sure to get a great nights sleep. The linen is really nice and great pillows too, when you get home you'll look twice at your own bed and wish you were still at The Modern. The bathrooms are a good size and have beautiful amenities make sure you use them as these get replenished daily - my hair and skin have never felt/smelt so good.
If you are wanting tea or coffee facilities in your room ring guest services and they will bring them up to your room for you to use during your stay.
There are two pools one is adults only and is not very deep and has plenty of sun loungers around and is a very tranquil area it has a bar and overlooks the Harbour. The other pool is just below and this is where they make they make the best Coconut Mojito's I've ever had - these are an absoloute must. There are sun loungers and day beds - the day beds are for hire at $150.00 for the day and you get that amount of money back to spend on food and beverage, great idea and you can easily spend the day down there. We dined at the Morimoto Restaurant and have had some of the best food I have ever eaten, you have to try the Wagu Beef it will leave you lost for words. If you are lucky enough to be there on a friday night you will also enjoy the fireworks provided by one of the nearby hotels, that just adds to the whole experience. One of the most popular clubs in the area at the moment is The Addiction night club, you need to get there early 10.30pm to make sure you can get in, it opens at 11pm and it doesn't take long to fill up - dont forget your photo ID. The ceiling is filled with 40,000 light bulbs-very cool.
This is a very modern Chic hotel that has a minimalistic look that's comforting.
The Hotel is a 5 min walk to Alamoana shopping centre and a 15-20min walk into Waikiki, there is an ABC store just across the road which provides you with just about everything from food, nic nacs, alcohol, beach toys the lot. There is a pink trolley that pics up from the hotel next door and for $2 you can make your way into Waikiki if you dont want to walk.
All in all a great place to stay very relaxing without being to far from all the action - highly recommend.

The Modern is easily one of the best hotels I have ever- EVER- stayed in. I stayed here with my husband and we had the most amazing stay. We arrived before check in and were told by reception staff that we were able to make use of the spa facilities (shower, towels, amenities etc.) until our room was available for check in which was a welcome relief after a 9 hour flight.

Once in the room we were so impressed with the decor- simple, understated but so incredibly chic. Unlike other hotels in Waikiki you really feel like you are in Hawaii- there are some brightly coloured prints, shells and star fish and a gorgeous little ukulele to really set the tone. And the bathroom amenities are to die for and smell so incredibly delicious!

Service at this hotel is outstanding! All of the staff greet you by the pool, in the lobby, in the lift, in the corridors... wherever you are with a big smile. I honestly felt like a celebrity the whole time I was there.

The pools are fabulous- main pool for a good proper swim (complete with lighting and speakers underneath the water) and also a shallow adults only pool which offers a bit of respite if you aren't travelling with kids and you want to simply laze in the sun on a day bed or a lounger with a superb cocktail.

And oh, the cocktails! These were some of the best cocktails I have ever had in my life. Pineapple martinis and coconut mojitos take the spotlight by the pool (especially with the spicy chicken wings- yum!), and in the ultra cool lounge bar the Study (lobby by day, hidden lounge behind a bookcase at night) the Lavender Keeper was an explosion of flavours.

Speaking of an explosion of flavours, you will be doing yourself a great disservice if you don't dine at Morimoto- the signature restaurant at the hotel. The food is wonderfully presented and uses the most amazing flavours and freshest ingredients. I'd rate this much higher than the nearby Nobu!

I will definitely come back to this resort- it's close to the shopping and Waikiki yet far away enough that you don't get the ridiculous noise that accompanies the hotels in the centre of Waikiki. Love love love it!

Room Tip: We were on the 16th floor in an ocean breeze room and had such a great view! Request a coffee maker...

What an amazing hotel - the highest level of service (but very genuine and friendly). The place even smells amazing - especially at reception and pool areas! Worth the extra money - next time we're in Honolulu, we'll definitely return.

Room Tip: We were in a partial ocean view room on the 5th floor - it looked over the pool and the lagoon on Wa...
