When the tide is in there's only a narrow strip of sand, but when you're holidaying at the beach at Waikiki who cares if you're hip-by-jowl with your neighbour? Best time to get to the beach is early morning, before the tide of tourists start filling in the patches of sand and before the sun gets too hot, and preferably at a time when the tide is in, so you don't have to wade too far out in the silky warm water. Be careful of the rocky outcroppings in the shallows. Plenty of shady trees in Fort DeRussy Park and nearby places to get cheap/expensive eats.

Even though the highs were in the mid 80's, the Hawaii sun will bake you if you're not careful. We walked a lot instead of paying for rides so this was a great spot to rest. It was quiet, shaded and very peaceful. A great place to take in the beauty of Hawaii in the middle of the city with the lush tropical flowers and trees.

We took family pictures in the park, some very nice plants in background. Great walk to the beach right through the park.
