We stayed at a relative's apartment in Honolulu and could walk to Waikiki Beach, but drove to Fort DeRussy (only about 1-2 miles). Parking is at a premium, but it's very worthwhile making the trek to Fort DeRussy. The beach is much less crowded than farther north. There are beach chairs, umbrellas to rent, as well as activities, like ocean kayak, paddle board, water tricycle. Additionally, the DoD owns Hale Koa hotel there, so there's several places to eat, including a barefoot bar right off the sand. Plus there are bathroom facilities and water for sandy feet. The park has nice grass areas and picnic tables, with grills and some shady spots. We picniced and grilled there. It was perfect, as we had a beautiful view of the beach and water from a shady, grassy spot.
