“This is what you go to Waikiki for”
Reviewed September 1, 2012

This is the gem of the Waikiki Beach but many people seem to miss or walk by the Fort DeRussy Park. It consists of several blocks of mostly parkland on which the military hotel and Fort DeRussy Museum are located. The hotel is for military personnel only, but the museum is really interesting and the park is a respite in the center of bustling Waikiki. The beach is open to everyone and is quite good and less crowded than Waikiki central. It also offers restrooms and beach showers. This is what Waikiki could have been without the predatory hotel chains that insist on building into the ocean. I loved walking through Fort DeRussy in the morning and evening.

“Lovely grounds, big trees in Waikiki”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

The Fort grounds are adjacent to the Waikiki Beach walk. We mostly just walked the perimeter at the beach and along the sidewalk to the Army museum. It's like a park except that it's owned by the US Army. It is the recreation area for visiting military personnel.

“Interesting exercise trail”
Reviewed July 29, 2012

Nicely maintained if a little haphazard, exercise trail was our introduction to the park. The park is tidy, but generally a flat slightly boring area. We were using it for jogging, and decided to use the fitness trail, although there are a number of stretches there was no apparent start or sequence, still a very good introduction to the park though, and it is a very nice green area near Waikiki.

“A good free museum”
Reviewed July 28, 2012

The museum at Fort DeRussy is a little old and a little dated in spots, but it is free and gives an excellent overview of the military history of the island of Oahu and the US Army's role in protecting the island from possible invasion. It is an interesting hour long break away from the shopping of Waikiki.
