Constructed from 1909 to 1911, this Coastal Artillery Battery protected Oahu with its two 14-inch disappearing guns. The battery was built so well that it was unable to be torn down in the early 1970's to make way for the military's Hale Koa Hotel. The battery was turned into a museum in 1976 and begins with early Hawaiian warfare and covers every major military event in the Pacific theater of operations through Vietnam. The Gallery of Heroes honors Hawaii's soldiers who have received our nation's highest awards: the Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Cross. Chartered in 1976 as a not-for-profit corporation, the Hawaii Army Museum Society, also known by its acronym, HAMS, was organized by several former military veterans and patriotic members of the Honolulu community. HAMS is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization whose mission is to support the U. S. Army Museum of Hawaii. HAMS is a non-federal entity. It is not part of the Department of Defense or any of its components and has no government status.

What an amazing surprise! Close to our condo, so went in to pass time out of the sun for a while, and stayed. So much information, photos, posters, memorabilia, etc, etc. It was free, not crowded, and so well layed out, very inviting to wander through. It was a great history lesson! Liked it better than the museum at Pearl Harbour. Staff is very friendly. Would definitely recommend putting this on your itinerary.

“Really interesting!”
Reviewed March 25, 2013

We visited here on our last day as we passed the time between checking out of our hotel and catching our flight and it was a pleasant surprise. You learn about the history of the army in Hawaii but also the part the Hawaii plays mainly in WWII (including Japanese Americans fighting for the US), and the Korea and Vietnam Wars. The museum operates off donation, so entrance is technically free. I would highly suggest if you are interesting in history and the military.

This was a great museum to visit! Not only is it free, but it describes the fascinating military history of Oahu! This museum is great for adults and children, and has a great gift store with reasonable prices!

“If you are interested in history”
Reviewed March 24, 2013

My husband visited this museum and he really enjoyed it. It gave a good history of the U.S. Army in the Hawaiian Islands and the Pacific and had lots of things to see and learn about. No entrance fee, stay as long as you want. You can easily walk here from all the hotels in Waikiki and from the beach boardwalk, or take the "Pink Line" shuttle bus. A good place to spend some time if it is raining out, or if you need a break from the beach.

“Love it!”

There is sooo much to learn about the wars and this gives very good insight from the Hawaiian perspective. I love the video about the Japanese American soldiers -so touching! Plan to spend at least an hour here but you can easily spend more. All they asked is a donation so another cheap attraction in honolulu
