Once you are in the Foster Botanical Garden, it is hard to believe (other than some background traffic noise) that you are sandwiched between the freeway and N. Vineyard Blvd. just a few short blocks from the Chinatown area of Honolulu. Lots of parking available, reasonable admission ($5 adult). This is a lovely oasis of a variety of tropical trees, palms, flowers, orchids & herbs. There is a self-guided tour that makes things easy to find. Many specimens are labelled for easy identification.

If you want to find a quiet, beautiful garden in a city, then Foster Botanic Garden is the place! We visit here every time we are in Honolulu and have been here several times. The variety of orchids is amazing and there are always tropical flowers in bloom. Some of the trees are HUGE and the collection of palms are awesome. Even the greenhouse is beyond description, so plan to visit and spend a few hours. Your soul will thank you.

I can't say enough encouraging things about this huge & lovely garden! We took the guided tour and saw an untold number of interesting plants & trees and learned numerous facts about them. Not at all expensive, easy to find, friendly staff, parking available. Anyone who likes nature will be thrilled to have toured this place.

If you get the chance, please stop by this lovely little oasis. I've been twice. Once with a new camera (and took a gazillion shots) and once with my husband. Both times were magical and I will go again for sure. There is a small entrance fee and the staff is more than willing to answer any questions. You can take a free park map with you so you know where you are in which specific grove (my avatar comes from the palm grove there) and you'll also be able to identify the major trees by number.

We were last there in April/May and the big Kapok trees were bursting forth with their little tufts of kapok which was everywhere. There are some fascinators there such as the Cannon-ball tree with its smelly blue fruit and of course, the orchid hothouse. This spot is obviously well appreciated by all and it's good to know that this little oasis is there - available, accessible and well maintained right there on the outskirts of Chinatown/downtown.
