“Amazing trees”
Reviewed September 15, 2012

This is a little oasis in themiddle of Honolulu. The trees are gigantic and awesome, and there are also a lot of nice flowers. It's not polished and spiffed-up like the resorts, but it's a really nice place to stroll for an hour or two.

“Pleasant stroll through unusual trees”
Reviewed September 15, 2012

This garden is mostly trees rather than flowers. It is fairly close to downtown Honolulu. There is a map which describes the trees and shows where to find them. It makes for a pleasant way to spend an hour.

Large garden. Able to leisurely walk around in coolness. Not many interesting or rare plants to view.

“Beautiful”

Foster is the ONLY botanical garden that you have to pay to visit. It is WELL WORTH IT. The grounds are always well kept and the aloha is always present.

“Great way to spend a few hours relaxing.”
Reviewed August 29, 2012

Right off the freeway near downtown Honolulu, Foster Gardens is wide open space with hundreds-year old trees (mostly from around the Pacific), an orchid garden, and a butterfly garden. It is filled with park benches for relaxing or just enjoying the scenery. You can take a picnic, and there's lots of space for kids to run around (though they can't climb the trees--it would be a tempting activity). The only reason I didn't rate it excellent is that some of the areas looked like they would benefit from trimming away some of the dead leaves. You can take a self-guided tour (they provide a map with descriptions) or you can call ahead or check online to find out when the botanist will provide a guided tour (takes about an hour or so). We visited on Sunday for the first time in 30 years; we just don't think about it as a place to visit but we'll definitely go back again soon.
