Had no intentions of visiting, but had an unexpected free afternoon. Enjoyed my visit- quite a broad spectrum of art represented in an interesting atmosphere- I've never had to open doors to enter rooms in a museum of art before. Roomy galleries. The Museum of Art is on the Waikiki Trolley Red Line.

A great art find in downtown Honolulu. Wonderful Oriental, Mediterranean, Hawaiian, and Modern art pieces displayed well. Great visit for the art expert or novice. There are some of the iconic masters, that one expects in a great museum, along with the little known or seen items. The staff is very friendly and helpful, displaying the best of the aloha spirit. The fee is less than one would expect for such a museum. One can couple a visit to the museum with a visit to an annex museum and or a visit to Shangri-la, Ms Duke's home,

...stayed for a long while, wandering through the various galleries.

Very helpful volunteers in the opening courtyard. There is a permanent collection of immense variety from all over the world. It is certainly not a huge place, since land in HNL is at a premium, but it is well done.

The upstairs Hawaiian collection of artifacts, paintings and sculptures are lovely to immerse yourself in. Did not anticipate seeing a deep collection of tribal Hopi kachina carvings (photo below).

If you have luggage, as I did, they have a secure place to hold it for free so you don't have to drag it around with you.

If you enjoy photography, there are various amazing scenes on the grounds to record.

Will be sure to fly over for future exhibits, as I live on what is referred to as an "outer" island.

We were very surprised that a private tour is on offer for free. we thoroughly enjoyed our tour with Phyllis, she is very knowledgeable and took a lot of time to explain to us the Chinese and Korean section of the museum; unfortunately we only had one hour, could have easily stayed for 2-3 hours.

Honolulu Museum of Art: One gallery had a rubber cockroach art installation on floor > there were so many that your eyes almost saw them "moving" = creepy fun!! Loved Doris Duke's estate – Shangri-La (from museum tours go 3x day) - she was so advanced in her design skills; the decor made me lust for areturn to Marrakech. The cafe is a nice spot to lunch and the guy in the coffee bar makes an excellent latte and fabulous tattos!
