Sunday was free. We slipped into the museum during the last 45 minutes before it closed. Headed straight for the Polynesian / Hawaiian Collection. Wonderful! Not to be missed! They had a special exhibit in the back room of broken pottery from a ship wreck in the South China Sea. Fascinating find. Wish we had arrived earlier to see more of the museum. Wonderful building.

Great museum, good fun Hawaiian style art with a spiritual feeling to it. Get a sense of the culture of Hawaii and at the same time you noticed some African, Asian, and Western influence in the art, pretty interesting.

This gem has a wonderfully sized collection with a nice sampling of Asian art as well. It is perfect for an hour or two and the setting, with courtyards between galleries is beautiful as well. I return on every visit because the museum is comfortable and inspiring. Not too much walking, but a great collection of art.

The Honolulu Museum of Art is hosts an unusually large and varied collection of paintings and artworks.

Inside the Museum, it is cool and tranquil, and we really felt the serenity and spirituality whilst we were looking at each painting/artwork.

Wed specifically came to look at the Impressionist's section as we love paintings by Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Paul Cezanne, etc, and we were delighted to see a very good copy of the "Water Lilies' by Claude Monet which made our day!

The Museum is very easy to get to by taxi, bus or, as we did, walking to/from the Ala Moana Shopping Centre.

The Museum has a very nice outdoor private café and has an excellent shop from which we purchase a number of gift items for family.

We thoroughly recommend a visit to this Museum by any art lovers of any age!

Note that this Museum is closed on Mondays but is open from 10.30am until approximately 4.00pm every other day of the week.

Enjoy!

I would recommend this as a day time visit as well to travelers that like to have a little culture in their life. Supporting the arts in any city is a must and I think it is something that too many visitors probably miss. If you have more time or you move/live here...then Art After Dark is a FANTASTIC and funky way to see the museum, along with having fresh local food from different vendors, some drink (who doesn't like a good drink outside in a courtyard?) and see a little more of some of the local art scene and youth culture. DJs, street artists, small clothing companies and other fun are often there. Most are themed, so costume is encouraged and sometimes there are extra fun activities and contests going on. All the while, you can scope out their many different rooms and immerse yourself in a little culture mixed with your night out. And it is early, 6pm-9pm so you can continue your night elsewhere and you are hop, skip and a jump from downtown Honolulu or Waikiki depending on what your tastes are. Parking can be tricky/scarce, but worth it in my opinion!
