If you are in Waikiki try and stop by for a few hours pleasure to this beautiful hidden gem of a museum. I discovered it a few years ago when meeting there for a tour of Doris dukes home, Shangri-La. It's a nice two hour or so respite from the craziness of Waikiki. I never miss it when in town. Parking lot across street for easy in and Out!

We stopped there while in Hawaii 2 weeks ago. It was good, not the best, but was interesting with some quality art on exhibit. You never know what you are going to see when visiting art museums. That's what make it fun.

People don't typically come to Hawaii for museums but if you get a rainy day, this museum is a great way to pass an afternoon. The museum offers more than appears for the compact size and the collection spans a wide range of time periods/ genres of art. Entry only $10 which is very reasonable.

Let's face it, we didn't go to Hawaii to visit art museums. But on the one drizzly day of our trip, we were glad we chanced on this interesting and pleasant small museum.

The collection seems to be strongest in Asian art, and much of it is excellent. For Western art, the museum wouldn't pretend to be the Louvre, but there is an interesting and broad selection. If there was a Rembrandt or a Leonardo, we missed it, but there were a number of quality Old Masters. There was a Monet water lily painting -- not the best he ever painted, but worth seeing. Photography tends to be strong, and there are special exhibits as well.

We're told the museum restaurant is very good and that tours of the Doris Duke mansion, Shangri-La, leave from the museum. If so, one could presumably visit the museum and the mansion on the same trip.

We took a cab from our Waikiki hotel -- $10 or so -- but it seems that a bus from Waikiki passes right by the museum. By the way, admission was free for people staying in our hotel, which seems to be a museum supporter. Worth checking! But the fee is quite low in any case.

Overall, one of the most pleasant indoor attractions in an outdoors city. When the drizzle began, it saved our day.

Museum was small but had a good variety of art. They had a great photo exhibition. Wish I had had more time to browse slowly.
