We went with the school and son. The kids really enjoyed it and we thought it was worth the extra trip. If you have the time it is a good one to see.

If you love an outdoor maze, what you will encounter here is an indoor version, replete with a warren of cloistered walkways, courtyards and quiet,low-ceilinged spaces.
This museum had its origins , as a cosequence iof a generous bequeathal by a Honolulu patron. She is spoken of in reverend terms, because she donated the large portion of her estate to the museum. I was impressed by the collection of ukiyo-e japanese prints donated by my one time favourite author, James Michner.. Its a small museum ,well curated, in not housing everything under the sun. take your time to savour the delightful paintings of local scenery and portraits.

As others have said this Museum is easy to reach by No 2 bus from Kuhio and they run about every ten minutes. The fare is $2.50 and if you pay with cash the driver will give you a ticket which enables a free transfer/return within two hours. The stop to get off is Beretania/Ward and the Museum is directly opposite the stop. However be aware that the return bus is from S King Street which you reach by crossing the Park outside the Museum. The Museum itself really is a Wolf in Sheep's Clothing. The entrance is not particularly impressive but once inside the welcome and guidance by the Docents is tremendous. The galleries unravel one by one with excellent content. As a bonus when we were there a special Anselm Adams/Georgia O'Keefe exhibit was available without additional cost. The peace and general well being in the galleries and many courtyards is a welcome break from the outside heat. Recommended.

When I moved from Cleveland, Ohio to Honolulu and first went to this museum I kept looking around for more rooms! There's more Asian art in Cleveland! HMA is a small and intimate setting, but still a pleasurable change from Waikiki or Oahu shopping. You will be treated well at the cafe, but it is upscale, not for young kids. Same with the gift shop. Make a longer excursion here with a trip to Shangra La (check ahead for days and times), or double up with their newly acquired contemporary art museum. Both are in other neighborhoods, so you'll need to do your homework, but the views at both those locations are breathtaking. Be sure to admire the huge tree in the park across Beretania St. that faces the front entry.
Come at night for films or classical music at the Doris Duke theatre at the rear of the museum. It's a no frills setting, but brings in quality acts for a reasonable price.

Bus #2 took me from Waikiki to right in front of the museum. Admission fee was $10. A volunteer took me and another visitor to the modern art / Western section for an hour guided tour. He was very knowledgeable and passionate about the arts. There are so many pieces of arts to see from Western and Asian to Islamic and Hawaiian. The collections are very extensive. I spent over 4 hours there with half an hour lunch break. The courtyards are very nice too. To return to Waikiki by bus, walk one block to King Street (parallel to Beretania).
