“Museum and Spaulding House a bargain”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

With a special ticket you can get entry both to the Honolulu Museum of Art, and the contemporary art collection at Spaulding House away up in Makiki Heights Drive. Both museums have cafes that serve delicious food and the Museum's setting is as impressive as it's art - although the lights in the lift went out when we were there and we had a spooky ride to the second floor in the dark. Spaulding House was a delightful surprise, set in expansive gardens dotted with sculptures and a permanent installation of David Hockney's stage designs for a Ravel opera. Go there on a sunny day and stroll the gardens and try the cheesecake in the cafe.

“You'll be surprised at the collection”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

This is a first rate fine arts museum. It is small but has an excellent collection. It has a ranked Asian collection and the Western galleries have just been redone and they're beautiful.

I go several times a month, as new exhibitions are always opening. Right now, there's a Georgia O'Keeffe/Ansel Adams exhibit, as well as a beautiful samurai exhibit.

“O'Keefe/Adams exhibit is wonderful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2013

This is a fine museum, but in all honesty we went for the current exhibit combining Hawaii paintings by Georgia O'Keefe and photos by Ansel Adams. Both were wonderful, and the exhibit was nicely put together with background on both artists and information about how and why they visited Hawaii. O'Keefe's story is of particular interest, since she was paid by the Dole company to paint advertising pieces but had no inteterest in painting pineapples.

A very interesting exhibit, and other parts of the museum were also worth seeing.

“Samurai Exhinit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2013

Exhibit of the Samurai was very cool. Many swords and armor. Was disappointed with the music because there was supposed to be traditional Japanese drumming and such. Crowd was huge which made for a party like atmosphere. This was part of "Art After Dark".

“I bet lots of people miss this treasure”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2013

It's worth going up into the precinct to be around some fairly important government and cultural heritage.
The fairly small exhibits of visual art, sculpture, glasswork etc. typify hawaii's obvious aesthetic excellence . Coming from an artistic city of excellence(Adelaide in South Australia) I feel a very strong empathy with this
Well worth a visit when up around the top end of the city
