This Museum is like someone's ;private collection of significant artists in the Western and Hawaiian world. You'll see Picasso, Matisse, Rodin - these works are not in the art books. Easy to get to by public transport. Always has a contemporary edgy exhibit as well.

Very nice building that hosts a well displayed collection of Modern and Ancient art.
Temporary collection was great to (Tony Oersler).

Spent summers here .. .. Rode the bus by here .. .. Never been in here .. ..

And, it's been my loss!!

A brilliant, museum that does Honolulu proud!!

A little bit of everything from Asian Art to the Impressionist masters > Was kinda shocked as I turned a corner and there was a MONET original .. .. In Hawai'i .. .. ;)))

Visited on a SUNDAY as they opened @ 1PM and had a nice HIGHLIGHTS TOUR that left @ 1:15PM .. .. I tied that in with the showing of Kurosawa's THE HIDDEN FORTRESS @ 4PM and it made for a thoroughly (and unexpected) terrific day that I didn't expect here .. ..

If you're looking for a little intellectual 'cooling-off' (AC) during the day, pop on in and be enlightened!!!

I arrived early as the museum was opening and had the privilege of joining Art, a guide on staff, to tour the Western art rooms. Art was gracious in sharing his knowledge as we moved from room to room ... providing background and historical perspectives that helped to frame the progression of the works from 17th century Europe to contemporary Modernism.

I later toured the Indian, Chinese and SE Asia rooms on my own, then found the Tony Oursler video projection art to be very intriguing. In all, a 4 hour sensory treat ... where I could be out of the sun and immersed in the cool, rich surroundings that make up this beautiful gem.

We have visited Oahu frequently for 45 years, and always look forward to visiting the museum (still strange to call it that, instead of the academy of arts). The courtyards and arched walkways take me to another state of mind every time. We usually stay for just an hour or two, visiting just a couple galleries each time. If there's time, we have lunch, and visit the museum shop. I've found some wonderful, reasonably priced scarves and other gifts there.
