Besides co-ordinating the trips to Shangri-La the HAA operates a top-notch museum. It is a pastiche of many media & millenia, but all in all, a wonderful, exceedingly walkable, mid-sized museum. In one gallery, as I stood in one spot, I could see a Mary Cassatt, a Childe Hassan, a Pissaro, a Monet, & a Cezanne! That is mighty good company!

The Asian and Pacific collections are especially strong, as is the Pacific-Rim orientation of the European galleries. Many, many fine works here. The building itself is magnificent, organized around a series of open-air courtyards. Gift shop and restaurant available. The Shangri-La tour requires a separate reservation; check the Academy's website.

Very lovely space. Nice small collection of art. Very well maintained. While we were there, they had a Paul Gauguin exhibit. Although they only had one oil on display, his woodblock prints were fascinating. Other galleries had an assortment of ukiyo-e and portraits which were equally interesting. A very pleasant afternoon well spent. The adjoining restaurant was wonderful too.

The Honolulu Academy of Arts definitely punches above its weight in many ways. I was happy to see a diverse collection of art from around the world.

I was very happy to see they could borrow landscape paintings from the Palace Museum in Beijing - Even in Beijing you cannot see these pieces.

This is quite a large art museum with various paintings, sculptures, and antiques and covers two floors. The admission price of $25 will also get you a tour of Doris Duke's Shangri La mansion. The place also has a restaurant. Just across the street from the building is a park and there were quite a few street people throughout the park on the day that we visited. The Occupy Wall Street or 99 percenters had several colorful tents and were holding up signs protesting policies of the federal government. I found this about as interesting as the museum.
