Owner description: Bishop Museum was founded in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop in honor of his late wife, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last descendant of the royal Kamehameha family. The Museum was established to house the extensive collection of Hawaiian artifacts and royal family heirlooms of the Princess, and has expanded to include millions of artifacts, documents and photographs about Hawai'i and other Pacific island cultures. Today, Bishop Museum is the largest museum in the state and the premier natural and cultural history institution in the Pacific, recognized throughout the world for its cultural collections, research projects, consulting services and public educational programs. It also has one of the largest natural history specimen collections in the world. Serving and representing the interests of Native Hawaiians is a primary purpose of the Museum. “Give yourself lots of time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2014

I visited while in HI on a business trip and wish I'd had more than the two hours allocated to see everything. So much to learn about the history and culture of Hawaii and beyond. The museum/grounds are themselves very attractive and the organization of the museum (different time periods on different floors of the main building) provides a nice "journey" through history.

“The Bishop Museum is as wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2014

as it was when I was a child. The museum building is made of lava rocks and is gorgeous. The exhibits are very interesting, well displayed and in excellent condition. This is a must for anyone interested in the history and culture of the Hawaiian islands and culture. Kids would enjoy this too as they have many offerings to keep them entertained like the planetarium.

“Short visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2014

I made an unplanned visit here during a rainstorm. I enjoyed what I saw but probably would have appreciated it more with a little preparation -- there is so much to see. Great place to go for Hawaiian history and culture.

“very well done”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2014

The exhibits are well presented and the history we learned appreciated. The Museum is three stories of unusual , varied and interesting items. We were there for three hours and could have spent even more time.
