This place is beautiful. All the beautiful wood and lots of information. We saw all 3 shows at the planetarium and a lava demonstration. I would highly recommend this museum. The little kids will love the lego display that is currently on. We brought our lunch and ate under a little shelter in the shade. The planetarium presenter is very friendly. Plan for 3-4 hours if you want to see all the shows.

The Bishop Museum has it ALL! We took in the planetarium, the traveling Lego display (wildly entertaining for even the 3.5 and 1.5 year old kiddos), the volcano display and the incredibly interesting Pacific Hall (which has really cool whale, shark, fish and canoe hanging from the ceiling). If you want to learn more about the culture and heritage of the islands, I'd say there's not a much better place to go. I suspect that if you really looked and read all the exhibits, it would take all day.......which makes the kids stuff more valuable! We loved it and would have liked to stayed longer, but time and (little one's) patience begins to run out. If I could do it again, I'd spend several hours with the kids and come back alone for the cultural/heritage part.

“Interesting in places.”
Reviewed January 1, 2014

This museum was highly recommended, and we found it interesting in places, particularly in the areas which it is best known for - local history and culture. But, the exhibits were rather limited and it did not take very long to see most of them. The hot show where rock was melted and poured was quite interesting and well done, as was the oral storytelling.

Was quite hard to get to - Bus 2 from downtown or Waikiki, but that is a very slow and crowded (almost an hour from Waikiki).

The cafeteria seemed to be poorly organized and a little run down, and food was rather disappointing.

“A great stop to learn before our Oahu and Maui trip”
Reviewed December 28, 2013

We went to this museum as the first day in Hawaii was soaked with rain. It turned out to be a great stop as we got to learn about Hawaii before our trip began. The guided tours of the different spots, including the story telling and the hula lesson were informative. Highly recommend and there is a direct bus from Waikiki although it does take about 1 hour by bus
