Owner description: Iolani Palace, the official residence of Hawaii's monarchy, is a marvel of opulence, innovation and political intrigue. Meticulously restored to its former grandeur, this National Historic Landmark in downtown Honolulu tells of a time when their Majesties, King Kalakaua, who built the palace in 1882, and his sister and successor, Queen Liliuokalani, walked its celebrated halls. Today, you can enjoy one of the most spectacular living restorations in all of Polynesia and immerse yourself in Hawaii's royal heritage. E komo mai! Welcome!

We thoroughly enjoyed the Palace. It was very interesting, and we learned some history, too. Wish we had taken our children to visit the palace on a previous trip.

This building was easy to find and only a short bus trip from Waikiki. Well worth a look and get the guided tour if you can. A lot of the original furnishings are there and some interesting stories are provided about each room. You will need an hour or so to get through it all.

We took the bus from Waikiki to Honolulu to the palace. We waited only a brief time before our tour began. Before entering the palace, guests were required to wear some booties provided to protect the floors (what a good idea). We opted for the audio tour which was very informative. The audio tour was $14.95 and well worth the money. Even though I am not American, I was very interested in the historical aspect of the palace. We spent about an hour in total. If you are American, this is a must see!

The Palace is at the opposite side of the road where the King Kamehameha statue is located, which is also a must to visit and take a photo. We didn't enter the Palace, but you should.
