“Small but lots of things to see”

I am impressed with the display of items in such a small place. Could easily take up 2 or more hours. We took a bus there from our hotel in Waikiki, and walk back along the beach. Very nice walk. There is outdoor display as well as indoor ones. Facilities such as washrooms and gift shop are good. The audio tour is informative, use it. Recommended, especially for kids.

“Small but done nicely”
Reviewed December 15, 2013

This is a small aquarium, however as I recall it was reasonably priced and the inside section appeared very new and had a lot to see. Once outside we were a bit disappointed, as we had expected there to be more.

It was a nice way to get out of the blistering heat for an hour or so and enjoy some wonderful creatures in blissful air conditioning! Would recommend doing this before or after the Waikiki Zoo, you can easily walk from one to the other.

As an avid fish keeper I was looking forward to seeing this Unique Aquarium, and was not disappointed either as they had the Discus fish that I keep back home, Now first Impressions were it's not too big or too small and is perfect for parents with young kids who are driving them nuts on a daily basis. The layout of the tanks here is pretty good giving everyone an education as to what's swimming around Hawaii, with many smaller tanks showing rarer and more delicate species in their recreated habitats, right up to the more sophisticated colourful reef displays, and a main display complete with some sharks and other large fish.
What I've noticed with a lot of people here, is they fail to understand the complex nature of creating and maintaining a coral reef aquarium no easy feat in itself as they take months and months to grow and take shape, the water PH has to be right along with the different light spectrums That's just for starters. Now walking around I was truly Impressed with the hard work that's obviously gone into these aquariums, which is what some people who leave negative comments here like "It's nothing special etc " should have a serious think about it first, before leaving such banal comments. Some of the bigger reef tanks were really bright and colourful along with the many fish swimming around happily, and were easily identified by the well displayed name tags, not only fish but, Octopus, Jelly fish, Sea Horses etc. And if that's not enough you can easily hire a set of head phones and listen to the guided tour, A real stand out is the Moon Jelly Fish exhibit set with blue lighting and is well worth a look folks.
Going outside you'll come across a working rock pool, with lots of marine life on show this is where we had a chat with a friendly worker who was explaining things and did seem very knowledgeable. Do check out the outdoor coral nursery growing under the sunlight too, and now we have the ubiquitous Monk seals who were unfortunately getting a make over when we visited and the pool was empty apart the bemused seals sitting wondering what the hell was going on, and were looking pretty bored. Having said all this I would highly recommend this Aquarium to anyone with an interest in marine life and is well worth the $12 entry fee as where else would you get something like this on your doorstop? Yes, we know this isn't Sea World, and there aren't mermaids swimming around waving to everyone like a certain place in Waikiki, but this is as natural as you'll get it without getting wet in the process folks, as for the staff here well, they seemed friendly enough no worries, and it would be nice if some parents could keep their little "darlings" in check as there's nothing worse than a screaming kid running around, perhaps a trip to the well stocked gift shop might shut them up? All in all one can spend a few hours here as there's something for everyone and well worth a visit whilst in Waikiki..!

“Very small, but a nice diversion for kids”
Reviewed December 7, 2013

My daughter and I stopped in one afternoon after some shopping. The aquarium is very small but was well-kept and had some interesting exhibits. We enjoyed learning about the monk seals. A very friendly docent was at the monk seals exhibit. I believe she was a volunteer rather than a regular staff member, but she was very patient answering all our questions about the seals, taking the time to look up some information that she didn't know off-hand. We were probably only there about an hour and that was plenty of time.
