Owner description: The resting place for more than 25,000 victims of three American Wars - World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War – this is truly the “Cemetery of Heroes.” Punchbowl was formed some 75,000 to 100,000 years ago during the Honolulu period of secondary volcanic activity. A crater resulted from the ejection of hot lava through cracks in the old coral reefs that, at the time, extended to the foot of the Koolau Mountain Range. Of special note is a monument honoring Hawaii-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who perished aboard the Challenger space shuttle in 1986. Also noteworthy are the Courts of the Missing, white stone tablets bearing the names of those missing in action from World War II.

“A beautiful resting place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 17, 2014

Thought that my grandfather's name would be on the WWII memorial. The staff found his name and gave me the information to get a picture of his name on the memorial. Very helpful. A beautiful resting spot for our heros.

“Solemn Beauty”

This cemetery was beautiful. We visited on Father's Day and saw many varieties of fresh flowers place on the graves. There is the ability to look up a name and find where they are buried. There is an observation area that overlooks the city of Honolulu.

“Peaceful, Respectful and Informational”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 15, 2014

It feels strange to be reviewing a Cemetery but this I find this place amazing. It is very tastefully done and has displays that show all the battles and tells how they were fought. I spent a few hours there reading about all the battles and how they were fought. The grounds are very well maintained and it is a great tribute to those that have given their lives for the United States.
