Owner description: The resting place for more than 25,000 victims of three American Wars - World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War – this is truly the “Cemetery of Heroes.” Punchbowl was formed some 75,000 to 100,000 years ago during the Honolulu period of secondary volcanic activity. A crater resulted from the ejection of hot lava through cracks in the old coral reefs that, at the time, extended to the foot of the Koolau Mountain Range. Of special note is a monument honoring Hawaii-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who perished aboard the Challenger space shuttle in 1986. Also noteworthy are the Courts of the Missing, white stone tablets bearing the names of those missing in action from World War II.

Incrediblle views of downtown Oahu and Waikiki/Diamond Head. Large Monkeypod trees shade the property and give it a serene quality. Very emotional, reading all the headstones from all the Wars we were involved in..

There are many notable headstones along the main road. We were particularly impressed with the large bronze plaque which thanks the 442nd for preserving the liberty of the French city, Biffontaine.

It is a cemetery that is in a bowl shaped landscape, very clean and causes one to sadly ponder how evil is war. So many deaths.

This is the Arlington Cemetary of the Pacific and is quite impressive. You don't need to spend much time here but it is well worth a drive-through if only to remember those who died defending the US.

I have a tradition of visiting military cemeteries whenever I travel and would have come here for that reason alone, but as a die hard fan of the original Hawaii-50 I also wanted to see the statue of Lady Columbia that was featured on the opening sequence of the show for 14 years. The cemetery is in a beautiful location in Punchbowl Crater (much nicer than the dismal Diamond Head crater) and has an appropriate air of serenity and piety. Lady Columbia did not disappoint, but what was a real surprise were the many extremely finely dome mosaic maps of varios campaigns in the Pacific during WWII as well as Korea and Vietnam. These are not mosaics created with tesserae tiles, but by various types of marble I believe. However they are constructed, they are beautiful to look at and informative to study.

As an added bonus, when leaving the cemetery turn right and drive the Tantalus/Table Top drive for some great views of Honolulu and the interior of Oahu.
