Owner description: The resting place for more than 25,000 victims of three American Wars - World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War – this is truly the “Cemetery of Heroes.” Punchbowl was formed some 75,000 to 100,000 years ago during the Honolulu period of secondary volcanic activity. A crater resulted from the ejection of hot lava through cracks in the old coral reefs that, at the time, extended to the foot of the Koolau Mountain Range. Of special note is a monument honoring Hawaii-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who perished aboard the Challenger space shuttle in 1986. Also noteworthy are the Courts of the Missing, white stone tablets bearing the names of those missing in action from World War II.

We came here to visit a friend on the third anniversary of his death. I was impressed by how well kept the grounds are. There is no flower shop on site so please make sure you pickup what you might need before you drive up the hill. There is also a great view of Honolulu at the observatory deck

THIS is the place to go if you want serenity and contemplative space. If you're at all interested in the war in the Pacific, the NCP is the place to visit. Architecturally, it's stunning and grand. The mosaics within the memorial depicting the naval and other military campaigns making up the war in the Pacific are impressively detailed. One could spend an entire day studying them. Also, if you can't get to the top of Diamond Head, the views of the Waikiki area are spectacular from the NCP location. This was definitely a well-spent half day visit.

We just drove through this area known as The Punchbowl. The cemetery was very impressive. Ernie Pyle is buried here. There is a great view of Honolulu. It is high up and the bus seemed to have some difficulty making some of the turns. We saw some interesting tropical birds here. Would like to re-visit when we could walk around.

This is not a typical tourist destination but it's worth the drive. The cemetery is loaded with history of battles that took place in the Pacific that many people will find interesting. There are also great views of Honolulu
