Owner description: The resting place for more than 25,000 victims of three American Wars - World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War – this is truly the “Cemetery of Heroes.” Punchbowl was formed some 75,000 to 100,000 years ago during the Honolulu period of secondary volcanic activity. A crater resulted from the ejection of hot lava through cracks in the old coral reefs that, at the time, extended to the foot of the Koolau Mountain Range. Of special note is a monument honoring Hawaii-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who perished aboard the Challenger space shuttle in 1986. Also noteworthy are the Courts of the Missing, white stone tablets bearing the names of those missing in action from World War II.

Beautiful cemetery. Trees line the road & the cemetery is so well kept. My uncle was buried there who was killed on Iowa Jima.

“Pretty, serene & historical”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 31, 2012

This was a sort of "accidental find", the cemetary is beautifully laid out, inside a crater with gorgeous landscaping and overlooking Honolulu, Diamond Head, etc. It was a wonderfully peaceful place, much like Pearl Harbor and great opportunity to take in more history. The memorial is magnificent and the most incredible are the trees in front of it, grown and trimmed to form a heart with it's leaves it casts a heart shadow on the ground from each side of the memorial. It is free to visit and a great way to relax from just doing the typical tourist runs. Gives one much appreciation for the sacrifice of so many back then.

I was particularly interested in the displays on the War in the Pacific. We had a very interesting veteran who spoke about the war in the Pacific which enhanced our experience.

“The ARLINGTON of the PACIFIC- a must see”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2012

Whether you have a minute or an hour, the National Cemetery of the Pacific is a site to behold for many reasons. It is in a volcano crater, a very unique location. From the top of the hill, you can see the city. Get out of your car and climb the steps. There is also war information showing maps and pacific battle sites where the veterans fought. Say a prayer for all who are buried there.
