Owner description: The resting place for more than 25,000 victims of three American Wars - World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War – this is truly the “Cemetery of Heroes.” Punchbowl was formed some 75,000 to 100,000 years ago during the Honolulu period of secondary volcanic activity. A crater resulted from the ejection of hot lava through cracks in the old coral reefs that, at the time, extended to the foot of the Koolau Mountain Range. Of special note is a monument honoring Hawaii-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who perished aboard the Challenger space shuttle in 1986. Also noteworthy are the Courts of the Missing, white stone tablets bearing the names of those missing in action from World War II.

“Somber stones in a beautiful place”
Reviewed December 21, 2011

The National Cemetery (Punchbowl) is one of the most beautiful and sad places on Oahu. The grounds are brilliantly kept, the grave stones sit polished in a sea of grass. You can climb to the old fort for a stunning view of Honolulu, taking in the memorial stones along the path, or go to the main monument. I like to visit when it is quiet in the morning and walk among the stones, reading the names and when they died, to reflect on the sacrifice they made.

It's probably not a good place for children as their patience would be tried.

“Replete with Quiet Dignity”
Reviewed December 12, 2011

This is a must see for anyone who was touched by WWII events on the Pacific Theater.

There is a dignified beauty here which permits all visitors to have some time for reflection on the sacrifices which were made, and continue to be made, on behalf of our freedome
