“Breakers Hotel review”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

My daughter and I stayed at the Breakers hotel for 5 days. We loved the small family feel to the hotel, although it is bigger than at first glance - over 60 self contained chalets style rooms, with fully functioning kitchenette, and all the basics needed to make simple meals. Everything within the room worked - it was such a welcome retreat from the heat in the day and so close to the beach and the shops. That was great for me as i could not walk far due to a knee injury and had to be on crutches for most of my trip there. The pool was great, just wish it could have been open before 9am and after 7pm! As we were often up early and wanted a dip before breakfast or at the end of the day when it was very humid and a cool dip in the pool would have been very welcome. So that was a big disappointment to us. The parking was the one thing that was a big let down... there are just 5 spots on site for guests and one spot just next door if you were lucky (i was!). On our arrival from the airport i think we spent about an hour driving around looking for parking which was totally exausting in the hea and actually really dampened our spirits for our little holiday together. We ended up paying $20 for an overnight stay in the post office car park which i found outrageously expensive. The next day we decided we were off to a wedding so took the car and on the return again no parking, so we ended up driving around in circles again... The fact i had to walk on crutches from where ever we parked made it a big inconvenience - we finally found underground parking on the road opposite - for just 7 dollars for the night (reduced rate).
But apart from the inconvience of the parking and the pool being closed nearly everytime we wanted to use it as we were out every day and came home late, it was a very nice hotel. The staff are super friendly and helpful, which went a long way to ease our ragged nerves on the first day and subsequent days following.
Cost wise - for me it felt expensive at $140 a night, but i guess thats normal if one wants a chalet style room with two beds (1 queen and 1 single), kitchenette, patio, daily maid and room cleaning service.

Room Tip: try and get a room near the pool on the 1st floor as its quieter and further from the main road.

We chose the Breakers Hotel based on the good reviews and low cost compared to other hotels. When I reserved our room, I let the lady on the phone know that we would be arriving around 5am since we were coming from the east coast and asked if we could check in early. She said that might be too early, but we could at least have the front desk hold our bags until check in time, which is reasonable.

Well, when we arrived at 6am there was no one at the front desk and the gate was locked. After about 10 minutes a grumpy man shows up and I ask him how to open the gate and he yelled at me to reach over and unlock it (sorry, I'm not used to "breaking into" gates). Unfortunately this guy was a staff person and refused to check us in or hold our bags so we could go eat breakfast. He said we could put our bags under the coffee table (out in the open) and that he wasn't going to watch them. So, we decided to just sit down with our bags and wait until we could check in. After about 15 minutes, he comes back and rudely asks us why we were still there and we let him know that we didn't feel comfortable leaving our bags unattended. He got all puffy and said he would check us in, but we had to hurry because he had stuff to do (which apparently meant feeding the stray cat he kept on a leash). Anyway, after damaging my credit card because he couldn't get the swiper to work properly, he gave us the keys to our room.

After dealing with this guy, we thought it couldn't get any worse - and then we entered our room. This place is very outdated. I'm all for the retro look, but I wouldn't consider old, dark, and moldy exactly retro. There was wood paneling on the walls, the bathroom had black mold behind the toilet, and the shower could barely fit one person.

The only good thing going for the Breakers was it's location. It is about a 1 block walk from the beach and close to a number of restaurants and shopping areas. Luckily, we only stayed here 3 days because if it was any longer I would have left, taken the cancellation fees, and just paid for another hotel.

Great little hotel a la US motel style in the heart of Waikiki. The best possible location, close to everything - entertainment, restaurants, beach, bus stop, and more. The service is fantastic. I really hope this hotel stays around for a long time. We will definitely stay there on our next visit.

Just spent a week here and had a great time, the staff are all very friendly and accommodating, the rooms are old style hotels rooms but very clean and serviced daily, the beds were very comfy.
The hotel is situated in a very central location right near the Fort Derussy beach and right next door to the new Trump Hotel.
There is a ABC shop directly across the road for all your supplies and is about a 10 min walk from the centre of Waikiki markets etc.
Each room is fully self contained if you wish to save money on certain meals etc.

Room Tip: ask for a room facing the pool either on ground or 1st floor and you wont be disappointed. one bit...

Found this hotel on Trip Advisor and not wanting to stay in any of the $$$ airport hotels before our inter island flight booked for 1 night. Wished we could have stayed longer.

Yes, the hotel is from another era but that adds to it's charm, comfortable clean beds, staff are friendly and efficient, large pool area with some tree areas for shade if you wanted. We only used the kettle to make our coffee but it was set up if you wanted to prepare meals with a kitchenette in each room.

Loved that we were able to check in after our mid morning flight arrival (we had advised our earlier arrival time when booking) and able to have a jet lag nap straight away, refreshed to enjoy the rest of the day in Waikiki, and easy efficient checkout the next day.

Would happily recommend this place to others for genuine good old fashioned value, clean, with friendly atmosphere of staff and guests, ok you don't get the 5 star quality amenities, but hey you are in Hawaii, get out of your room and enjoy the sunshine :)

Room Tip: Agree with the others, if you can get a room closer to the pool the better, we were here only one ni...

**Please note that the photo of the brick stucture which appears atop the reviews IS WRONG. Check the travelers photo section for the real deal!**

Having stayed at the Breakers several times over the last 30 years, I can't imagine staying anywhere else.
Despite it's central location nestled among the giant towers of Waikiki, it's unique low rise, low key vibe provides a welcoming retreat from the hectic pace of "the strip".
Decor is a bit dated but that only adds to the "Old Hawaii" sesnibility; the all-kitchenette rooms and grounds are meticulously tended.
Popular with Japanese tourists, the small scale layout encourages interaction among the "residents" which is a plus in my book. Travel IS about people after all.
No fancy upscale facilities like some of the resorts; but you're in Waikiki so who needs them?
Last visit, as we rounded the corner on Kalakaua Ave approaching The Breakers location, my eldest daughter said, "It feels like we're returning home to me; like it's our place".
I couldn't agree more.

Tip: breakfast at Eggs and Things is terrific!! Litereally steps away on Saratoga, they're open early which is a big + for early rising jet-lagged travelers. Make sure you try the Portuguese sausage in some form.

Room Tip: The garden units have a separate bedroom; ideal for families.

Second stay at the The Breakers, it's like going home. The staff are amazing. The location is perfect. The busy streets of Waikiki disappear as you pass through the entrance. The pool and the grounds are kept spotless. Everyone gets to know each other, guests actually talk to each other, what a concept! Morning coffee ready when you awake. I hope I can go every year!
