Excellent hotel. We walked the entire beach at Waikiki, and the only place nicer than the Hale Koa is the Hilton right next door (at 3 times the price?). No other property has anywhere near the space to work with. The Hale Koa's pool and grounds dwarf the tight quarters at all the other properties. The staff was great, and it's kind of nice knowing you have something in common with all of the other guests. I noted in a local magazine that the Hale Koa was voted best for both ‘luau’ and ‘reasonably priced fine dining’. Waikiki is a busy, bustling area. The Hale Koa was one of the few properties where one could find some measure of solitude. Definitely a good choice.

We have now stayed at Hale Koa for the 7th time and every time it is only better. There is no way to compare it to other hotels ---its price /service/ammenities and "Everything" are superb and we would stay "No" where else when visiting Waikiki and we have stayed at many 5 star hotels all over the world.....We are looking forward to another stay in the near future.....Kudos to the outstanding people at Hale Koa and God Bless all of "Our Military"....

We just got back from an 11 day visit.

1. The staff from the reception desk to the maid service was great, not one negative attitude.

2. The room was clean and was well taken care of. No old or outdated items, such as nasty wallpaper ect.

3. The grounds were beautiful and tended to on a daily basis. The pools were also cleaned daily and staffed.

4. The resuraunt's food and service was also great. We had an Entrainment coupon book, but no eating establishment could beat the prices offered in 2/3 of the Hale Koa resturaunts. The food was really good although the menus could have been a little more extensive. No extra charge for room service.

5. The Hake Koa has a PX and it has almost everything in regards to tourist mementos that you can find in Waikiki at half the cost. Folks did a lot of shopping there and it closes at 2200 hours on most days. We highly recommend the Aloha Statium Swap Meet on Wed. Sat and Sundays for tourist shopping. It is huge and you will save big bucks and have a good time.

6. No coffee in the rooms, but the little coffee cart opens at 5.00 AM. $1.15 for a large.

7. Only went to the lua. They did a great job. they handled 600 people with no proplem. Very organized. The show was very good and they did not forget to pay tribute to the heros in our military, past present and future.

My wife and I had a great time. It met or exceeded all of our expectations and the Hotel rivals anything that Honolulu could offer in the way of accomadations. If you are active duty or retired military you will have a great time.

We lived in Hawaii for several years, and occasionally chose to stay at the Hale Koa hotel on Oahu because of it's centralized location and rates. The Hale Koa is a nice property located on an "uncrowded" stretch of Waikiki Beach (uncrowded by Waikiki standards). This 817-room hotel is not an intimate resort, but it's great for military families with younger children. Our Oceanview rooms (in the Ilima Tower) were spacious, although the decor and bathrooms were a bit outdated. The lobby, grounds, beach and pools are wonderful. The hotel staff is friendly and accommodating. The restaurants are adequate.

When my wife and I traveled to Waikiki by ourselves, we preferred to stay at the Moana Surfrider, in a Historic Banyon View (oceanfront) room. This historic hotel is stylishly furnished with koa antiques and traditional Hawaiian decor. The hotel has a gracious and professional staff, an oceanfront restaurant - "The Banyan Veranda", an oceanfront pool, a stunning lobby and courtyard and other enhanced amenities. The price is slightly higher than the Hale Koa, but well worth it. If you want to "splurge" for a special occasion or anniversary, I recommend the Ihilani Resort & Spa at Ko Olina, located approximately 30 minutes west of Waikiki (the Ihilani and Kahala Mandarin Oriental are the only true resorts on the island of Oahu).

We ate at some exceptional gourmet restaurants in Hawaii from "A Pacific Cafe" on Kauai to "Roy's" on the Big Island and many points in-between. But the best restaurant by far is "Alan Wong's" in Honolulu. Chef Wong's Contemporary Hawaiian Regional Cuisine includes freshly caught local seafood and scrumptious local produce. The 7-course "Chef's Tasting Menu" is a delightful culinary experience that you will never forget. For casual dining on Oahu, one of our favorite spots was Gordon Biersch on the waterfront at Aloha Tower Marketplace. This brewery restaurant features great beer, food and views of Honolulu harbor.

Whatever you do, be sure to spend only a few days in Waikiki. Visit some of the other islands, see the real Hawaii and live a little!

Clean, Quiet (if you want). The beaches in front of the other hotels were so packed with wild, partying teenagers that the H. K. beach was a peaceful island of sea breezes and luscious sunsets. During the day it was a fun place to be without being run over by surf boarders. The rooms were nice. (Not that you spend anytime there) The restaurants were reasonable. The gardens were beautiful and the luau was wonderful. We are going back !

Stayed here June 29 to July 8 and it was almost perfect as usual!

Great stuff: Got an ocean view room - - in the older tower on the fourth floor - - we were apprehensive about being on a low floor until we saw the view... When you wake up, open the curtains, and get back in bed, you look out onto palm trees, the ocean and the sky - - it was AWESOME! We were in a corner room so had a view the other way too but that side had a lot more "roof" in it (below us) so we kept those curtains closed and just enjoyed our palm tree/ocean/typical Hawaii view. Room service is fast and very reasonably priced and the food is very yummy. Delivered in a brown bag but who cares?! It was all good! Barefoot Bar: strong and reasonably priced mai tais! Pool was great and not too crowded. Bought tickets to Germaines Luau at the ticket office - very convenient.

Needs some updating: ...The only down side to Hale Koa is small bathrooms, no movies available on the tv (although you can rent movies down at the PX to watch in your room), no internet access, no business center, no valet (parking is across the street and you're really sweaty by the time you walk up to the hotel because of the humidity and stairs). All 4 star hotels have these amenities so once Hale Koa gets those things added, no other hotel will ever be able to compare!

If you can stay here (hard to get a reservation during the high season) DO IT!!

Here's a tip. While it's true that only active/retired military and GS folks may stay at the Hale Koa, it is also true that the beach bar is open to all. As a former Army member, I'm delighted to visit the bar each and every time we come to Oahu. The friendly bartenders make terrific drinks which are fairly priced.

It's a great place to rub elbows with current and active duty folks, many of whom have varied and interesting backgrounds. As others have mentioned, the grounds are gorgeous!
