I love the Hale Koa. It is a great hotel on Waikiki Beach and a fraction of the cost of other hotels on Waikiki Beach. Okay, perhaps that's a slight exaggeration, but it IS significantly cheaper for equivalent accommodations at other hotels of the same caliber. if you're military or DoD civilian and there are rooms available, you should definitely stay here.

The front desk staff that assisted us in our check in was extremely warm and friendly. She gave us a complimentary upgrade to an ocean view room and answered all of my questions. I've read lots of reviews about how the rooms are outdated, etc., so I was pleasantly surprised to see how nice it was, particularly the bathroom. The room was equivalent to what you would expect at your standard Marriott...except Marriott has WAY better pillows (you know, like the Courtyard or Residence Inn, not a JW Marriott or Marriott resort). I like that the hospitality suite was available for use even after we checked out. You can leave your bags with the bell man if you have a late flight and want to goof off for a few more hours before heading to the airport, once you've checked out. The pools were nice - no fancy infinity pools, but definitely much nicer than some of the "fancy" hotels in the area (like the Westin). The grounds were extremely clean and well maintained, there are lots of dining and entertainment options if you don't want to leave the hotel grounds, and it's located right on the beach. Yes, it's about a mile to the "main" part of downtown Waikiki, but it's totally walk-able if you don't have a car and not a big deal. In fact, the main start to the shopping/dining portion of Waikiki is only a block away, so it's really quite close.

The parking lot is across the street and contrary to other reviewers who've complained about that, it's really not worth crying about. My only real complaint would be that there is no free Wifi and they no longer have a business center. It's not a big deal, nor is it something that would deter me from returning again, but it would be nice to have.

I'm giving this place 5 stars because when comparing this hotel to others in the same category, it really is a bargain for the same value.

Hale Koa Hotel is the best bang for the buck on Waikiki. Military discounts available. Built from USO funds.
It has nice clean rooms with spectacular views and a location at reasonable prices. Lots to do on property including fitness center, massage, fitness classes. plus several bar and dining options. There is a luau 2 nights a week as well as a comedy and magic show on property. Water activity rentals are available on the beach. Staff is friendly and helpful.
Restaurants are OK. Senior discounts are available.
Ocean side bar is OK. Will come back again.

Hale Koa offers nice clean rooms, spectacular views and location at a very reasonable price. Lots to do on property including fitness center, massage, fitness classes (water aerobics, tennis and yoga), the exchange, several bar and dining options. The yoga class is excellent and Is a great way to start the morning. There is an activity center that you can get information on and book tours and actives, submarine underwater sightseeing, dinner cruises, helicopter tours ets... Car rentals are also available here. There is a luau 2 nights a week as well as a comedy and magic show on property. Water activity rentals are available on the beach including paddle boards, kayaks ocean tricycles and large circular floats for the ocean. Staff is friendly and helpful. The restaurant is one area that could be improved. The food is basic and just okay and one of the staff mixed up several orders including mine. I ended up just eating what they brought rather than sending it back although they did offer to make the correction after arguing for a moment about what I ordered. Overall this is a wonderful place to stay, great location and value with pretty much everything you need onsite.

I was speechless when we arrived. I have never booked my husband and I at a military resort and was not sure what to expect. The grounds were gorgeous and the staff was extremely helpful! However, the staff in the restaurant was always slow-allowing our drink glasses to be empty most of the time...this was the only area that needed addressed.

We went to the Hale Koa for brunch on a Sunday morning and drinks one evening to their beachside patio. Both experiences were really nice and cheaper than anywhere in Waikiki.

This hotel caters to the military community and offers substantial discounts for active duty or those with a military id card. Even without the idea, drinks were 9.00 as compared to a restaurant in a neighboring resort where the same exact drinks went for 22.00.

Parking is also cheap for the military here which worked out well becuase my friend was visiting us so her and her husband (who serves in the Air Force) were able to use their parking garage. Sunday brunch has two different options - Koko cafe and the Banyan tree. Both looked good but we went for Koko Cafe which was only 13.95 per person and less crowded. Service was great, food was good - we all left happy!
