“Great resort”
Reviewed December 25, 2006

We have been going to the Outrigger Waikiki on the beach for 14 consecutive years. We go every November for 2 - 3 weeks and have always had great weather. The staff a the pool, Danny, Roosevelt and Peter are fantastic. Jared recently moved to the front desk and has always made sure we had a great vacation.
What is great about this property is, if you continue to return you will find there are many guests that are also repeat customers. We have met many new friends and see them every year. We have found the rooms to be clean and the staff helpful. We have looked at other hotels in the area but have found this location with the great sandy beach and a pool with a fantastic view to be the perfect location.

We stayed from November 30, 2006 until December 05, 2006 in a Deluxe 1 Bedroom Oceanfront Suite (room 623) that had the best view of Diamond Head from the side and a perfect view of Duke's and the beach below. The room was decorated with Hawaiian items and the furnishings were Tommy Bahamas style decor. The entire property was extremely clean and orderly; the housekeeping was prompt and would get you anything you needed. From the check in to the restaurants, the entire staff treated us as though we were family.

We ate at the Hula Grill one night then Dukes the next and on our last night we dined a Chuck's Steakhouse. With past Food & Beverage experience I would say that the food was best at the Hula Grill for dinner. Our booking included the free Duke's breakfast buffet or a special menu from the Hula Grill. We enjoyed the buffet over the special menu and the view was great early in the morning.

We used the beach services for our daily stay on the beach. Brent and Doug took great care of us, we had our umbrella and lounge chairs setup and waiting for us each day. My wife said that this was the best service bar none. The beach in front of the Outrigger has the best swimming of all of Waikiki.

Malamalama from the front desk was the most helpful of all the staff. She helped guide us to the adventures we were looking for as well as helping me decide on the best room to stay in.

We recommend the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach to anyone planning to visit Waikiki. I know we will definitely be back to Waikiki in 2007 to stay at the Outrigger Waikiki. I do not think there is another property in Waikiki I would want to stay at.
If you can afford it go for the deluxe suite it will be one of your most memorable experiences ever.

We have posted a few pictures and will post more in the comming days.

Well, after reading many reviews on this site( and others) we decided to stay at the Outrigger on the Beach, from Nov. 24- Dec2.
We wanted beach front, good location, nice clean rooms , restaurant choices and a nice view. All that for less then 200 dollars a night.

We got it at the Outrigger on the Beach. We paid 198. and got breakfast thrown in also. Great deal, the breakfast buffet was definately excellant, made on the spot omelettes, fresh fruit, yogurts, granola, fresh baked goods, french toast( very good) waffles with warm strawberry syrup( filled with strawberries!) bacon, sausages( two kinds) eggs, eggs benedicts, etc, etc, . We had breakfast there 7 days in a row and never got bored!

We had room 1220, which we loved, not ocean front, but full ocean view, it was clean, had two double beds, and a sofa, plus a desk and a decent sized bathroom( only a half tub though, but we never use the tub on vacation, just shower) Mini fridge, iron and board, hair dryer, and safe (free) all in room also. Lots of closet space. We recomment staying on a higher floor just to avoid any noise , we think anthing about 8 or 9 would be fine.

We requested and got, a room facing Diamond head, thank goodness as the rooms on the other side get awful noise from a roof fan on the Cheescake Factory. We could leave our door open at night and hear the waves crashing!

Dukes which is the restaurant/ bar downstairs is great. Best price out of all the "beach bars " for evening cocktails ( we checked, $9 for a Mai Tai at the Pink Palace, $8 at Sheraton, and 8 at Shorebird. )Food is good too!

Dinner at Dukes has best salad bar around, we ate at the Shorebird ( at the Outrigger Reef) one night and were highly dissappointed! Highly recommend the Shrimp Scampi( tons of HUGE shrimps)
Staff at hotel were very pleasant, maid was effiecent, but, if you are the type who wants your sheets changed daily , you have to request that, there is a card you leave on your pillow that indicates that. Extra towels no problem!

Pool is small and salt water, but, has the best location on the beach for lounging, get there EARLY and reserve a lounge on the top deck overlooking the beach, it is heaven! Ice water provied, bar service after 12( food also) and as many fresh towels as you want all day!

Only negatives about stay were in regards to Waikiki in general, it is crowded, but, for us that energy is fun, some might not like it. I do recommend this location for number one convienence to everything, and after checking prices for all the other beach fronts the Outrigger on the Beach is the least exspensive for a WATERVIEW room( not a construction site room deal like some other hotels may offer you!)

We found elevators to be quick enough, and have no idea what some posters though about the waits for them, we never encoutered more then a few minutes, which is normal we think .

We loved our stay!! We were there during the earthquake. The service the hotel provided us was wonderful when we were without power. They provided free sandwiches to all the hotel guests when there was no power in the city.

We were on the 16th floor and had an ocean front room.. I would recommend spending the extra $$ and get an ocean front room. There is a great little sandwich shop right off the main lobby. The staff were really helpful, and the upkeep of the hotel was beautiful. We used the excercise room in the later morning or evening to avoid a crowd.

I would recommend going down and renting and umbrella and some chairs if you are going to be on the beach during the day. We got out there around 8 when it opened and got the pick of where we wanted it set up. Then you can come and go all day long with out worring about your beach space being saved.

Our room included the free breakfast buffet. It had such a great variety that you could fill up on a big breakfast and then either some fruit or a light lunch.

In Nov. the sunsets on Waikiki at 5:30 and you do want to be on the beach to see this lovely sight with the sail boats off in the distance.
This hotel is in a fine location, but there are several other hotels on this strip of beach we would consider on our next visit. The rooms and bathrooms are of adequate size and well maintained by a friendly maid staff. The hotel and restaurant staffs are very attentive and accommodating. Unfortunately, by 8:30 AM, most poolside lounge chairs have been reserved. This is unacceptable. By the late afternoon, however, one can find a chair to enjoy those fab sunsets and the lovely, warm water of the beach. The room noise was an issue for us, the irritable, crabby kid in the next room and the flushing of the toilets. Some sound-proofing would have been a good investment. I chuckle when I read "location, location", as there are other choices in excetllent locations.

Stayed at the Outrigger Waikiki from Nov 11-18. We had a great overall trip but had lots of problems with the hotel, Room 727 Oceanfront:
1st – A/C didn’t shut of the first night, needed a new thermostat
2nd – Housekeeping shut off our refrigerator and food went bad
3rd – 1 of the 3 elevators were not working most of the days we were there. It took over 15 minutes to get up to our room on the 7th floor.
4th – They cleaned the carpets in our room while we were checked in, never heard of any hotel doing a deep cleaning while room was occupied.
5th – They were re-sealing the bathtubs in some of the rooms. One of them happened to be the room right next to ours. Our room filled up with a horrible smell that made us sick. We couldn’t breathe in our room even with the balcony door opened. This is when we called the front desk and told them we had enough. We had only been there for 3 days and all of this happened. We told them they needed to change our room right away because we were getting sick from the smell. They said they would call right back which they didn’t we waited about 10 minutes and had to call them back. They told us they found us a room on the 14th floor, same category. We told them they needed to send up a bellman to help us move. About 5 minutes later a manager called us and told us she was moving us to a different room because the room on the 14th floor also had the same smell. They did upgrade us to a 1 bedroom suite on the 3rd floor. We were happy that at least they did realize they made several mistakes. In all fairness my Mother and Sister also stayed in the hotel and didn’t have any of these problems except of course for the elevators. The other problem that we encountered was that the staff never really listened to us. When we told them about the A/C in our room she asked us what we wanted them to do about it. We had to actually tell them they needed to replace the thermostat. We called to tell them we would be out of the room from 8-3 so they could clean the carpets they asked if we wanted them to clean them after 3!!! One night we called for turn down service and said we would be leaving the room in 15 minutes, they sent someone there right away. The hotel is in a great location but they really don’t seem to know how to run a big hotel. I would not stay there again. I would try the Sheraton Moana Surfrider which is right next store.

Just got back from Honeymoon from October 30-November 9. Let's start with the only bad for the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach. Thin connecting door to adjoining room means we can hear all that happens next door! Many we talked to at the hotel had the same problem. It really is only a problem if the people next door are generally loud people. We had a group of 40 something woman and we could hear every word at 3:00am of what they did that night. Finally called down after 4 nights of this and it stopped.

And now let's get to the good and some things to do in Oahu....

Pool is deep, not great for kids, but it is in the best location in Waikiki. While it was relatively easy to get a chair by the pool, the best were gone after about 9:00am. I was there most mornings at 8:00am when it opened, and many were already reserved by the pool attendants for guests, who were long term guests, or gave big tips. We always got the best seats overlooking the beach and steps away from our lunch at Duke's. Try the Duke's Blonde Ale. It's pretty good. It is an open air restaurant right next to the pool and overlooking the beach as well. AWESOME.

Ala Moana Mall is great, especially on our rainy day. Liked Bubba Gump's Shrimp and all the brand named stores. Had fun.

When visiting the Arizona Memorial, get the $5 headsets. We didn't, but did when we visited the Bowfin Sub and the Missouri next door, we got them and it was awesome. Great info and entertaining. And the submarine was the best of the three for me and my wife.

Had great food at all three Outrigger restaurants, the Hula Grill, Duke's and Chuck's. Easy to get into Hula and Chucks at night, very hard for Duke's. But you can call down and put your name on the waiting list and get ready in your room. Usually a 45 minute wait by 6:00pm. And one Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, get to the hot tub area by 4:00 and grab a table for the live entertainment. We did, drank a lot of beer from 4-10pm so we could keep or table, but had a great time, even though it wasn't the best music.

Sealife Park is old and dated, but if you can afford it, swim with the Sea Lions. Only one of 4 places in world to do this and well worth it just to get so close to these animals. Used Outrigger Activities by Duke's for all or adventures.

Take a shuttle at 6:50am to Hanauma Bay, arranged through conceirge. Only cost 15 dollars each so we didn't have to worry about parking, and good to go early before sand all stirred up. Glad we did this instead of renting a car for this.

Do the Luau at the Royal Hawaiian next door. Was pretty good food and great views to watch a luau.

Rent a car to do island tour. Stop at Haleiwa just before North Shore and go to Kua'Aina for the best Avocado Burger I've had (and the first). Excellent.

And lastly, get a coffee at the Honolulu Coffee Company right next doot at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider. It's right next to the Outrigger. Get a table and people watch out their window, or sit on the rocking chairs in front of the Sheraton. Better coffee than at Seattle's Best in the Outrigger front entrance, and much nicer people. We were referred to this place and glad we started going there. Walk to the west about 7 minutes some days to Kapahulu Groin and watch the local Boogie Boarders. Fun to watch and excellent view of Outrigger and Royal Hawaiian.

Have fun and remember to bring lots of money. Cheaped out the last time I was in Hawaii, and this time did it right. It truly was an awesome time at an excellent hotel. I can't imagine staying anywhere else. I wanted to stay at the Royal Hawaiian before I chose this trip and glad I didn't. I simply like the setup better at the Outrigger, especially our short walk to Duke's for lunch.
