Splurge on the oceanfront room, it is well worth it. Stayed in a Diamond Head Suite this time and it was lovely, highly recommend it. Staff as always is very nice, rooms are clean, nice bedding, etc. Hotel is not super deluxe but can't beat the location.More
Great reasonably priced hotel right on the beach amidst the more expensive Sheratons and Westin.
Although we originally booked an Oceanfront room, we were advised to down grade to an Ocean View to enable 2 adults and 2 kids to have a bit of space with 2 double beds and a sofa, which is apparently not available in Oceanfront. The double was a tad small for my husband and I who had been in kings at other resorts, but otherwise our room was a decent size and the layout of the bathroom/dressing room afforded us a little more room for luggage to be stored.
We were on the 14th floor looking towards the tower of the Westin but had a direct view between the two buildings to the beach. We could not see Diamond Head as the Westin Tower blocked out view. It was still a little noisy on the 14th floor so I understand other reviews where comments mention noise from the restaurants and Westin tower from the lower floors. Another plus on the higher levels is that you also have an express lift which was a real bonus.
We only had 3 nights here at the end of a 2 week holiday, so it was the perfect spot to be in terms of the easy access to the beach, restaurants and bars (Duke's, Hula grill), shopping etc.

We stayed here for nights either side of a cruise on the Pride of America. As others point out the location is what really makes this place: walk out one side and you're on the beach; the other and you can shop 'till you drop.
This really is a hotel that has everything. Great rooms, good service, and a fantastic location.

We stay at the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach every year, sometimes twice a year. We choose this property for its location right on the beach, perfect for walking to restaurants and shopping. The staff is friendly and the rooms are clean and comfortable. In a previous review, I commented on the renovations, including new soundproofing (a plus) and nice décor. New for us this trip were improvements to the elevator system. Whereas there used to be big crowds and long waits for elevators, the process has been streamlined by the addition of a new system where the room key is scanned, the floor is keyed in, and the guest is directed to one of four elevators. It takes some getting used to, as there are no buttons inside the elevator; however, overall, we found the wait time less and fewer stops on multiple floors.
My only complaint with this hotel is that we have been going there for 40 years. We know what view we like from our room. I specifically requested an ocean view room on the Diamond Head side, reserved well in advance, and arrived to find we were assigned a room on the other side, overlooking several large, noisy air conditioners atop the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. We were able to change rooms the next morning, but only after upgrading (paying more) to a "deluxe" ocean view room. The hotel's policy is that the room category (ocean view) is guaranteed, but not the specific location/side of the building. I feel that loyalty should count for something, that repeat guests should be valued, and their preferences noted.

My wife and I flew over from the Big Island to see the Lion King. We chose to stay at the Outrigger Waikiki because it is in the heart of Honolulu. And, it houses Duke's one of the best restaurants on the beach in Waikiki. We were well served by a very friendly staff particularly by room service for breakfast each of our two mornings. Plenty of good food. Quickly delivered. And, remarkably inexpensive. The hotel has installed a new elevator security system. So, be ready for a little learning experience, but it's week worth the peace of mind that it offers. We will be happy to stay there again. The Lion King? Just as fabulous as when we saw it when it opened on Broadway.

We found welcoming, warm, friendly service and "can do" attitudes from the staff of OWK during our stay. Even at the height of the Christmas holidays, we were treated like family and felt welcomed by everyone we came into contact with. The front desk staff, the concierge who arranged our trips, housekeeping staff, bell staff, restaurant staff right down to the parking attendants/valets who provided maps and trip advice all made our stay extra special.
Our oceanfront room with balcony was spacious, beautifully decorated, neat, clean and quiet. Complimentary toiletries in the bathroom in case you needed them. The walk-in closet area was a pleasant surprise.
The view was spectacular (especially the sunsets) and when I opened the glass door to the balcony, the music from the live band in the late afternoon was so uplifting it gave us the feeling that we truly were on "vacation".
Do visit Duke's Canoe Club and the Hula Grill while you're there. Good food at both for breakfast and lunch. Fun atmosphere at Duke's...there was a live band every afternoon around 4pm. On our next visit, we will skip Chuck's Steakhouse. There's a reason it's the only restaurant that you don't need dinner reservations for. The aroma of chlorine bleach near the salad bar turned my stomach and the low quality Filet is way overpriced. Next time we'll go to Duke's or the Hula Grill instead for dinner.
I can't wait to come back on our next visit to Waikiki!
