the location is great but the hotel is very ordinary. the rooms are small and the bathroom amenities are poor (the bathroom cups are plastic wrapped in plastic, like you would see in a cheap motel). i had requested a room with two beds and on arrival was told it wasn't available unless i paid an upgade fee. the website photos of the pool are very misleading - in person it's one of the smallest hotel pools i've ever seen, and considering the size of the hotel and number of rooms, totally inadequate. inside, the lobby and common areas look worn and tired and in need of a major overhaul. on balance, the staff were friendly and helpful, with the exception of the restaurants. it was a busy time of year (the week between christmas and new year's) so it's fair to expect the restaurants to be busy, but the young girls at the hostess desk of both restaurants were rude and uppity. i would give this place a miss next time and stay somewhere off the beach for a better facility and better service.

We stayed at this hotel for 6 nights in a partial ocean view room from Christmas Eve with all out 4 adult children, son in law and 13month old grandson.
The location is perfect- the beach is right outside the door, close to shops, transport etc. We paid extra to have breakfast included - very good buffet in Dukes and the A La Carte in the Hula room was very good. One morning we had an early tour and you could use you voucher in the cafe downstairs from 5.30.
We had our family Christmas dinner in the Hula Restaurant and it was very good (with no extra charge for Christmas Day), as was Chucks steakhouse.
Waikiki was very busy at that time of year so finding a restaurant for dinner was sometimes a challenge.
My only complaint was not really with the hotel but a tour we organised through the tour desk with Polynesian Adventure tours to Pearl Harbour, The Missouri and Honolulu City tour. The tour desk told us if we didn't go on a tour we'd have to queue for hours- but i think you can actually buy tickets online and not have to be out of the hotel by 6.30am. The Pearl Harbour Missouri tour was excellent but our bus tour guide Ed, while a very nice man, never got to the point- waffled on, the bus broke down which meant our tour was held up and didn't end up returning to the hotel until after 4 instead of 2. The replacement bus air conditioning was totally inadequate . We were sitting in the back - 7 of us and a baby and it was so unbearably hot the baby was getting distressed so we all got off the bus and caught a very well airconditioned local bus back to the hotel. Our complaint about this to the tour desk achieved nothing - thus this post !!

Room Tip: Partial ocean view room has a nice view of the beach- not 306 degrees but enough to get a beach feel...

We arrived from NZ on Christmas eve and left New Years eve. While the hotel was bustling with people, check in was easy and the staff were welcoming / pleasant. The hotel is right on the beach and centrally located.
Our room - located on the 9th floor and faced towards the Royal Hawaiian. We had a peep of a sea view from the balcony. The balcony was handy for checking out the surf conditions and for drying out damp swimming gear. With no double glazing, we noted a hum from the air con units on the roof of the back end of the hotel next door, even with the balcony doors closed. And there is a wee bit of echo when glass was being placed in the dumpster - but this is out of the control of the Outrigger. We had a queen bed, which we had no issues with, good storage, a safe, iron/ironing board, tea/coffee making facilities, an empty fridge (great for keeping food and drinks cool) and a compact ensuite (downside of the ensuite was the toilet being located right next to the wall where the bed head is located and the door is a sliding door, so it paid not to be too precious about 'noises' first thing in the morning). The room was often serviced around 2pm - the ladies do a great job.
Eating & drinking - We only tried out Dukes. Given the time of year, it was seriously busy! Dukes serves great food and beverages. The buffet breakfast is superb ($16ish pp) - lots of fresh fruit, plus the other standard stuff you would expect and the made to order omlettes are 'yum'. Breakfast alternatives - buy a container of fresh fruit salad and a container of yoghurt and granola from the ABC across the road, or buy oatmeal with your coffee from Seattles Best Coffee near the main entrance of the Outrigger. Dinner and lunch alternatives - there are many. As it was so busy at the Outrigger, we often ended up buying dinner across the road at the International Market - food there is varied, well priced and tasty. The Cheese Factory is also very close, but once again, because of the time of year, we noted the very long line of people waiting to get in and opted for either the International Market or eatting at one of the food courts.
Swimming options - the pool isn't that large and was always very busy, so it was difficult to find a lounger. We opted to sit on the beach (which is also very busy). You can rent a lounger on the beach (not cheap!), or buy an umbrella from the ABC shop across the road and lie on the beach using the towels from the Outrigger.
Laundry - coin operated machines are available which are located on the LL level down the path towards the pool. If you are not into doing it yourself, a service is available.
Internet - I had problems connecting to the free WiFi. The cost of using internet services at the business centre are expensive (25cent per minute). There is an internet cafe on level 2 of the International Market $2 for 10 mins.
Tours - there are loads and they can be booked at the hotel, or you can walk across the road and make a booking with a tour operator located near the International Market. We enjoyed a day out on "The Surf Bus" ($79 booked through the Outrigger) and headed over to the North Shore. Beaches here are not as busy as Waikiki, but the Banzai Pipeline was building, so certain beaches were no swim zones. We also did a Pearl Harbour tour, which we enjoyed, but we found the guide a wee bit condescending and noted the 'tip' display at the end of our tour (may be that was a reminder for those of us from Down-under??).
Shopping - heaps to chose from. The luxury brands are located on Kalakaua Ave (aka Luxury Row), as is Macy's (who were open on open Xmas Day and were having a pretty good sale). The ABC stores are really handy for every day needs from drinks (including alcohol), to food, clothing, personal needs etc and the prices are good. The Ala Moana Shopping Centre (ladies will love this shopping complex and the food court is good too) is easily accessed using the 'Pink Line' Shopping Shuttle ($2 pp one way - have the correct money as no change given). The shopping shuttle sometimes runs a direct shuttle back to the DFS Galleria Depot - put your hand up to use this service if there is a long line of people - DFS is very close to the Outrigger.
Check out was easy and pleasant. We booked a taxi with 'Aloha Waikiki Shuttle Inc' to take us to the airport (we'd used Speedi Shuttles to get us from the airport to the Outrigger = $15pp). Aloha were a no show, and were not picking up their phone when the staff at Outrigger rang them to check where they were. The Outrigger staff suggested we ask another couple who were also headed to the airport if we could share their limo - thank goodness they said yes.
Overall - a great trip. Staff at the Outrigger were lovely and very helpful and we will be staying there again.

Aloha KiwisCan, we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and that our guest service team was friendly and attentive to your needs. The hotel is in close proximity to many shopping and shopping and dining establishments. Dukes located in the hotel is a very busy restaurant. Oftentimes, the restaurant is filled with people throughout the day. We hope to see you back on your next visit to the island.

We were really impressed with the Outrigger. Our room was supposedly city view however if you looked to the right we had a lovely view of the beach. Our room was a really good size and the bath products were lovely.
The shops underneath the hotel were really reasonable and the laundry was very useful.
We loved Dukes, I recommend the fish tacos. I would say that the only negative is that the beach by the hotel is very busy- but it is Waikiki! and the loungers were also pretty busy.
I'm sure you'll enjoy a stay here.

We booked two rooms from Dec 23-Jan 2, and now that we have stayed here, couldn't imagine staying anywhere else. Our partial ocean view rooms were on the 14th floor, and gave an excellent view of the ocean. While our two rooms were laid out differently, they were both adequate for us, and were very clean. We thought the beds were incredibly comfortable (and the pillows were great also). Noise wasn't an issue - we kept our balcony doors closed at night, and tended to keep them open during the day (mostly so we could hear the sound of the ocean). We were in Waikiki after all, and some noise is part of the deal when staying there. The staff were very helpful, professional, accommodating and friendly. They greeted us daily, often remembering us by name, and inquiring about our day. The location - right on the beach, as well as central to everything - was perfect. We loved the entrance to the hotel from Kalakaua Avenue, and always felt good returning after a fun-filled day. We didn't experience any issues with the elevators being slow - and we used all elevators (the regular ones, and express one for floors 14 and higher). We enjoyed eating the buffet breakfast at Duke's, and dinner there was great as well. We only ate at Hula grill once for breakfast, but can say they had great pancakes! We didn't make use of the pool at all as we wanted to swim in the ocean, and we chose not to rent the beach umbrellas and chairs - we simply sat in the lower pool area by the beach, and loved it. Mahalo Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach - you didn't disappoint! You helped to make our holiday a memorable one. Keep up the good work!

Aloha LorMo, we are happy that our staffs were present to assist you during your stay. The breakfast buffet at Duke's is delicious with a wide variety of entrees for everyone to enjoy. Hula Grill offers ala carte items on their menu that is also good. We welcome you back to the property on your next visit to the island.

The never-ending flight from Heathrow to LA and then on to Hawaii definitely takes its toll but upon arrival to this hotel we were given a warm welcome and rewarded with complimentary breakfast vouchers which was lovely. The staff were great and couldn't do enough to ensure we had a brilliant stay. The location is fantastic - right on Waikiki Beach! And close to all the shops and restaurants. If you get the chance, ask the concierge about all the amazing excursions on offer. We took a helicopter ride of the island - with the doors off(!!!) - and had an exhilerating experience. We also took a guided tour of the North side of the island and saw many movie locations and magnificant turtles. Returning to the hotel was always lovely and Dukes Bar is a great place for cocktails and food. Their breakfast is good, all you can eat, plenty of fresh fruit and cooked food too. Can't wait to return soon!

My husband, I and our two children just spent an amazing 10 days at the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach. The time at the hotel was simply amazing. The hotel was newly renovated back in August of 2012. So, everything is still nice looking. The staff was great and the room was clean. Some tips we've learned:
1. The hotel charges an obscene amount of money to rent beach chairs and toys. Your best bet is to go across the street to one of the ABC stores and get cheap beach toys and foldable chairs to use on the beach. You would think as a hotel guest, you would receive beach rentals for free. But, its not the case. It's 25 bucks to rent a chair all day. You could spend 25 bucks at ABC and use your chairs all week. And then pass it on to another family before you leave. This is what we did.
2. Waikiki beach is overly crowded. You feel like a packed sardine. I would suggest renting a car and going to Hailewea beach on the North Shore. Less crowded and more beach to spread out.
3. While you are over at the North Shore, check out the Thai food restaurants in the area, They are amazing.
4. If you are interested in activities like visiting Pearl Harbor etc. Do not go through the activities desk. Their people work for Expedia and a lot of their packages are way over priced. For our Pearl Harbor tour, we booked it ourselves and spent half of the money we would have going with one of their packages. I would suggest shopping around early. Visiting the hawaii discounts website etc. If you plan early, you will save money.
5. If you want to go snorkeling, go to Huanema bay early. I believe the park opens at 7am. Be there at 7am. Because by 10am, you will not be able to see the fish in the water due to all the suntain lotion and other chemicals that come off everyone's body in the water.
6. Check out Leonard's Bakery for their famous malisades pastries. They are like doughnuts but without the holes. This is a very famous bakery on Oahu and you have to visit it.
7. For Luau's, go for Paradise Cove. The Polynesian Cultural Center has a good show but their dinner sucks. And the Chief's Luau is ok but the setting is not that great. Paradise Cove has it all and the food was great. Go for the orchid rate and you will be fine.
This was our second time in Hawaii. Next time, I think we will plan on staying on Maui where its less crowded or staying on the North Shore on Oahu. Unless you like crowds, jacked up pricing and loads of high - end shopping, then stay on Waikiki.
Hope you have a good time.

Room Tip: Choose the city view room. You save lots of money and you still get a view of the beach.
