“Old World charm and luxury”
Reviewed February 6, 2014

If you want to be directly on Waikiki Beach in the heart of Honolulu, experience old world charm, be treated like a king, and have many options, this is the place. This was my first trip to Hawaii. I admit that I was part of a group traveling as a reward from my company. But this hotel has it all. I worked out in the gym every morning. It was more than adequate. We walked out to the Mai Tai lounge for breakfast right on the beach. Spectacular views of Diamond Head. There are dining and shopping options all around you within a short walk. The hotel bar had friendly bartenders and they make a good drink. The restaurant was top notch. Friendly staff everywhere. The room was clean and bright (garden view). The shower was great. Glass wall and door on one side, tile all around. Big shower head. The room was charming with a desk, refrigerator, and chairs. Do not ignore the history of this place. There is a lot of information just in the pictures on the walls. It is worth buying the "Pink Palace" book that they have for sale there. One of the best hotels that I have ever stayed in.

Your wish is their command! Staff are the friendliest people on the planet.......I can't say enough on how much they added to our vacation. We decided to spend the money for an ocean view room. We had the best of both worlds. Our room was in the historic section.....from the beautiful carving on the door to the well appointed room.....to the incredible view of the ocean, Diamond Head, and garden below. The shopping and dining experience......also five stars. What more can I say!!!

We stayed for five nights in late January, 2014. Had a room in the beach front tower, which was terrific. We were particularly impressed with the staff --check in, restaurant, around the pool, etc. Very warm and gracious people. We loved the hotel and the experience. The room was quiet. The AC worked well. We would, however, not recommend this hotel unless you have a room in the tower. The rest of the hotel looks pretty old, and the other rooms don't have balconies or the ocean front outlook. The only negative concerns their practice of charging daily for chairs on the beach or several of the chairs around the very small pool. Perhaps 30% of the chair space around the pool was taken by umbrellas and chairs they charged for (they were pricy) and while we were there those were empty most of the time. They should use that space for free chairs, particularly because there are so few chairs anyway because the pool area is so small. This was not, however, a big deal to us and we still will return to the hotel.

Room Tip: book ocean front tower

We stay here every Jan-Feb and love the hotel. Always the friendliest staff and the hotel location and amenities are superior. The hotel site directly on the beach and all you hear is the waves and not the city noise. The Mai Tai bar offers great options for quality food and drinks. While the Azure restaurant menu is not your typical resort affair.
Well worth the little extra for a real paradise experience.

Room Tip: While the beach front rooms offer great views of the ocean and are worth the money, the other rooms...

I got a deal on the room and the room was awful. Tiny, a bit shabby and the shower wouldn't drain. I guess you get what you pay for and this Hotel is expensive. Housekeeping was wonderful and I had a great time. Just know when you go thru a discount reservation you get the dregs of the place!!!

Room Tip: you get what you pay for!!!! no deals

One of the best location in Waikiki. Awesome Mai tai. I stayed at the newer, tall building and it was clean and quiet. The hotel has the charm of old Hawaii and all the amenities and things you'd expect from a new hotel. Great staff, good price for the location and quality. I'd definitely go back.

Room Tip: Good rooms with a great view comes at a higher price but worth it.

Honolulu is a big city, too crowded for my taste. Once we entered the driveway of the Royal Hawaiian, we were in an elegant oasis. The doormen and reception staff made us feel like we were the most special clients they had ever had, as if they were waiting just for us. We were upgraded to a suite--as I say, they made us feel very special--but the standard room we had booked looked very comfortable as well.
Housekeeping staff was in the hallway whenever we were out of our room, and they never failed to greet us, offer assistance, answer questions. Our suite and everything in it sparkled.
We chose the older building, which is full of character...tall ceilings, nice light from the windows, a view of the gardens. The doors to each room are unique. Housekeeping staff explained they were carved in the Philippines, part of the original hotel.
If you don't want to venture outside the oasis, there are rocking chairs to sit in, a wide veranda to stroll, complimentary Mai Tais and great dining at Azure.

If I return to Honolulu, I will not stay elsewhere.
