“Lovely location, wheelchair friendly, some minor issues”
Reviewed August 1, 2013

We stayed 1week at the Royal Hawaiian, for our 10th wedding anniversary so we left the kids at home. The hotel has lots of history and its great they have kept many original features. We had a very warm reception upon arrival despite arriving at 7am after a delayed flight. The wheelchair accessible room we booked was in the original part of the hotel so this meant the rooms were smaller than in new tower addition, they were nicely furnished but you couldn't swing a cat. We did have a few space issues especially as we were travelling with a medical hoist and other medical equipment. Most hotels usually keep the larger rooms for accessible ones but this was small in comparison to other rooms on the same floor according to the map.

THe beach was beautiful, and the Mai Tai bar was the perfect spot for a cocktail. The hotel charges $32 inc tax resort fee. But this did not include the use of the sun beds on the beach which seemed strange for a beachside resort. The sun beds on the beach could only be hired as a pair at a cost of $50 for the day, we found this excessive considering you we're not even allowed to enjoy a cocktail whilst on the beach. The hotel had a strict no alcohol on the beach policy, as this was said to be the law on Waikiki, however we witnessed daily other tourists just bringing their own beers/alcohol on the beach themselves, away from the hotel.

The pool was lovely but very small and crowded, you could never get a sunbed near the pool until late afternoon, and it was full of young children, which isn't really a negative in itself as we usually take our children away, but there is not an adults only pool. We were told that we could use the facilities in the other sheraton hotels either side of our hotel but the only exclusion was the adults only pool! So for a luxury resort if your looking for a quite peaceful escape where you can relax in the sun with a cocktail you unfortunately can't do it here, which is a real shame as its a lovely hotel.

Dear nicky b,
We're delighted to learn that you found The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort to be a lovely hotel, and we're especially honored to have played a small roll in your 10 year anniversary celebration. Thank you for sharing your very valuable comments regarding our room, particularly your concerns with the space available in our ADA room. We do apologize for any inconvenience you experienced due to the room size not meeting your expectations. We understand it can be frustrating to watch other beach users consume alcoholic beverages and we hope this did not have too much of an effect on your beach experience. It is in fact against the law to consume alcohol on our beaches in Hawaii, and our beach and pool service ambassadors as well as our restaurant ambassadors have the tough job of sharing this with our guests. We regret to learn that our sunbathing and pool area did not meet your expectations and we apologize for this. We hope you will consider giving us another opportunity to extend our warm hospitality to you.
Warmest aloha,

Excellent service, beautiful room and amenities. The hotel leaves nothing to chance. Anything you could possibly need is provided in the room. The bed was extremely comfortable. We will stay again at the end of our honeymoon trip. We are looking forward to experience the hotel again next week.

Room Tip: We had a room on second floor with partial view of ocean. Everything was great.

No other hotel on Oahu has that old Hawaii feel like the the Royal. Located beachside. Sensational service. Friendly people through out the property. Convenient location in the heart of Waikiki. The Surf Lanai Sunday brunch is nothing less than spectacular!

I travelled to Hawaii with my parents we stayed in 3 different places. The Royal Hawaiian is beautiful and instantly you feel you have stepped into another time. The grounds make you feel like you are truly in a jungle the trees are huge and amazing. Location is a big plus. One minute you are walking in your 1920s era pink palace that is open to a magical green yard and the next you have walked right into the open air shopping area with lots of cafes. It truly is the best of both worlds. My dad loved the Ferrari store. There is everything you would ever want to buy even an Ugg store mom and I spent a lot of time at forever 21. The beach is awesome it's busy but that's Waikiki right. The water and beach is better then some I have been to in the Caribbean. Before going I searched for reviews to tell me what was around the hotel and came up short. So I will say to all those like me don't worry there is plenty of shopping and restaurants around and an ABC store where you can get chips, soda, souvenirs, flip flops, and dresses you name it. My mother that uses a wheelchair when we go on long walks was with me WALKING when we stumbled upon the "city". So everything is close by but when on the hotel grounds feels worlds away. Sorry this was more about the city part but that was what I was looking for when needed help.

Second time we've stayed here. Everyone was A1 from our check-in person to our cleaning people. Close to everything. We were enjoying the hotel and Waikiki beach area so much, we decided not to hassle the traffic and go to the north shore....just hung out at the beach. Guess we'll have to come back so we can visit the north shore... :)

We had 4 nights at The Royal Hawaiian, after getting engaged, and had a superb time. The rooms are beautifully done and the hotel grounds are step back in time. On arrival we were greeted with leis, a hibiscus tea and some banana bread (with the recipe attached in case we were interested). It's also a completely serene change of pace from the hustle and bustle of the shopping strip outside, and fronts onto a nice stretch of the beach looking east towards Diamond Head. Valet and staff were friendly and the Mai Tai bar is worth checking out, particularly for the live music and dancing.

Makes for a great base-camp too in terms of location as its an easy walk along the strip to Dukes if you want a cocktail or to La Mer if you want to celebrate a special occasion, and an easy drive onto the freeway if you want to check out the other coastlines or the outlet malls.

We just finished our stay at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki Beach. Our expectations were much higher than what we received here at the resort. We were welcomed by with a floral lei and great Bell and Valet attendants, then it started to go down hill from there. We go to check in and the first thing I am asked is; "do you want to upgrade your room to a ocean view for $100.00 a night more?" Gee, not even a welcome to our hotel? Our room was nice and our view of the garden is what I wanted. We did not receive the fresh fruit or banana bread as promised, but we did have the empty tray on our desk! My wife goes in the bathroom and there are no wash cloths. So we call down and the problem is taken care of. we go down to the pool (very small) and so we go out to the beach. The view is beautiful but you have to rent the lounge chairs for $40.00-50.00 a day. We give in and rent the lounge chairs and we wait for drink service. 30 minutes later we just walked to the bar and got our drinks. We go back to the room at 4:00 PM and it hasn't been made up! We call and they said they would send a maid so we leave and come back later on and the room is done. I go into the bathroom and see the coffee that I drank that morning was poured into the sink! No wash cloths again, and no sugar and cream for my next cup of coffee. I flag down a maid in the hallway and ask for a washcloth and she tells me they are working on finding some! What?? The next day comes and we ask the maid if someone could possibly clean our room, and she tells us that our room was not assigned to anyone to clean! OK, now I'm starting to get a little angry. I called down to the desk and they said the problem would be taken care of. The next day, once again, coffee in the sink, no creamer or sugar, and you got it, NO wash cloths! Don't get me wrong, this is a nice place with great location. For the money you pay to stay here, much more attention should be paid to the service aspect. When I told the front desk about our problems he told me to wait till the morning and talk to a front desk manager! Wow, not even an "I'm sorry sir!". Being a part time travel agent, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone but I would tell them to stay at one of the sister resorts, (Sheraton, Moana Surfrider, Princess Kaiulani). I'm not made of money, but when I do spend it for something nice, I would like to be able to enjoy my stay without having so many problems...

Room Tip: Stay in the garden view rooms. Better yet, stay at the Sheraton or Moana Surfrider.
