“What a great hotel.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2012 via mobile

My wife and I came to Hawaii for the first time to celebrate our anniversary. When we checked and informed the hotel of our celebration, we were sent a complimentary bottle of champagne that was excellent. The service here has been wonderful. Our room was recently renovated and nicely done. The hotel is right on the beach and we loved spending our time there. We took advantage of the pool and hot tub. The cabana derive was great and we loved our time in the cabana. We ate the the Azure restaurant in the hotel and let me tell you, the food was awesome. It has been a great time and we will definitely come back again.

We stayed four nights in Nov 2012. I remembered Waikiki beach as wild, crowded and not relaxing...but the stay here completely reversed that opinion. Arrival we were greeted with warm welcome aloha, a lei and refreshing guava drink, while seated at a concierge-type reception desk and full discussion of amenities and available rooms. We were early, 11:00 and asked for a tower ocean-front room (spg platinum) which would be available at 1PM. We returned much later, the room was ready and our balcony did have a view of Diamond Head and the beach & ocean.....Shaded and just lovely. Oh, that bed......the main reason we continue as SPG Plat is to keep those upgrades and stay in luxury collection or Westin because of the bedding. Even the Sheraton sweet sleeper in some cases have wonderful textiles. This king bed was fabulous and so restful; the great sheets crisp and cool when we came in daily from activities to really rest. The whole room was elegant and understated; with old-world Hawaii charm, heavy furniture and good lighting. Marble or travertine bath and a bidet/toilette you should research (Toto washlet s300) to get a real idea of this amenity. The pink-striped robes were lined with creamy feeling terry, and so comfortable; drinking my PINK champagne (gift from hotel for our anniversary) on the balcony in my robe was a highlight! The manager's reception was a Christmas event, with carolers and a tree-lighting, and the best appetizers and chef's bites in addition to free-flowing mai tais and pink champagne. We never made it to the mai tai bar to try the world famous mai tai but these were excellent; rich carmelized rum atop refreshing pineapple juice. The ice machine outside our room was a "nugget" machine; my favorite kind of ice. Chewable small cubes that melt more slowly, super-chill a drink and add to the refreshment of even a glass of water. It was in a small cabinet available any time. LOVED THAT! One night we went for a swim off the beach; there are big lights into the water and it was heavenly. The water there is clear and refreshing, excellent sandy bottom and good soft sand beach. The waves were perfect for just bouncing gently and watching the shore in chest-depth, listening to the ukelele music drifting out. We returned to our room and ordered up a burger, which was absolute BLISS! The texture and flavor of the rich beef was exquisite, and the quality of the bun, some kind of soft and dense bakery style bun was mouth-watering. Extraordinary hamburger. Mornings take you downstairs to a beachside/poolside outdoor cafe and there are selections for SPG breakfast which is cereal, croissant, fruit, yogurt or toast and juice & coffee. The coffee is delicious. You can upgrade to a full breakfast for $15 but we were fine with what was offerred. Overall the lovely grounds, peaceful and gracious are worlds away from the hustle-bustle out on the street or on the beach mid-day; yet all are mere steps away. The only negative is that twice I had soaped up my face and reaching for a washcloth.....found there were none and I had to call. The other two nights they remembered to replace our washcloths. It is private, and we got exactly what we went for....rest each night and a beautiful place to quietly ease into the day each morning.

Room Tip: I am sure the historic portion has magnificient rooms, but our mission in hawaii is always to view t...

If you're looking for a spot RIGHT on the beach - Royal Hawaiian is for you. Historic Hotel - recently updated but still loaded with character. This is a first rate experience for those who don't want a crowded, rowdy hotel.

The staff is fantastic - friendly, helpful and always with a smile. The views from the tower room are post card perfect - Diamond Head in the distance and Waikiki Bay spread out below your balcony. The crashing waves lull you to sleep.

Room Tip: Most corner rooms in the tower have a HUGE balcony - be sure and ask for a corner room with wrap aro...

My family has returned to this hotel many times over the years, and the charm that impressed us at first has just improved. Let's be clear first about the price. It's expensive, so make yourself aware in advance of the cost of the resort amenities such as beach and pool cabanas and budget accordingly. But we would much rather have a great stay here than have a slightly longer but humdrum stay elsewhere. That said, the two charms of this hotel are: the generous and elegant public spaces that bring out the best of the beachfront location; and the amazing staff. Many of the staff are second and third generation employees of the RHH, and their pride in the history of the hotel shows through in their friendliness to guests. From the registration clerks to the crew at the beach, all are professional and charming. Their commitment to the hotel has lasted through several changes in ownership, and they provide the continuity that keeps us returning. The hotel restaurants are remarkably good and compete favourably with well known stand-alone restaurants. But the jewel for us is the famous Mai Tai Bar. Most of the staff have worked there for years, and it shows in the easy efficiency and good humour they bring to each shift. Try at least once during your trip to sit at the bar itself and get to know Kui, the head bartender. You'll be joining a circle of his loyal friends that extends around the world, made up of people for whom a trip to Hawaii wouldn't feel right without a stay at this hotel and an evening at this bar by the beach, surrounded by the lights of Waikiki and the sound of the surf.

Room Tip: I haven't ever had a bad room, though I prefer the old building to the newer tower, just for the...

My husband and I stayed at The Royal Hawaiian for two days prior to a cruise. We were greeted with beautiful leis and were given a cool drink while waiting to check in at the desk. You were seated at a desk and checked in instead of standing at a counter. We were offered an upgrade but declined since we were only stay a couple nights. Everyone was very gracious. We were in the original hotel and absolutely loved it. Our room (garden view) looked out over the front of the hotel. It was a lovely view. Our bathroom did not have any washcloths but we asked for a few from housekeeping - no biggie. Every staff member we encountered was so helpful and always had a smile on their face. There were so many comfortable places to sit and enjoy the outdoors, lots of comfy sofas, chairs, rockers.....
We had booked a Hanauma Bay snorkeling tour with the concierge desk prior to arriving and checked with the concierge when we arrived. We were given a lovely notecard with all the details we would need for our excursion.

The Royal Hawaiian was right in the middle of everything !! Right on the beach, shopping and dining mere steps away !! Everything we needed was within walking distance. We did not use the pool but several people seemed to enjoy lounging around it and, of course, lots of people were at the beach. The Royal Hawaiian had the most relaxing ambiance. It was a little oasis in the midst of all the rush of Waikiki ~ We highly recommend this jewel ~

I seldom give 5 stars, because I'm of the belief that there's always room for improvement.

The Royal Hawaiian is an exceptional luxury establishment. When we approached the hotel, we were greeted with Aloha, smiles and lei! Upon entering the lobby, there is no check-in counter. The process is done seated at a desk with cool tropical fruit juice to drink. Check-in is as long as necessary for a complete understanding of what the Resort has to offer for our enjoyment.

Our accommodations were spacious with 12' ceilings! It was very clean and smelled fresh. The room has much old world charm with every upgraded modern convenience installed. The efficient climate control was extremely quiet allowing for peaceful nights of sleep in a comfortable, fine linened, King Size bed.

When the Housekeeping and Groundskeeping Staff always greeted us with smiles and a big Aloha, you somehow can't help but feel special! Everyone, from the Porters and Parking Valets to the Management Team, is very well trained in hospitality as well as their duties.

I'd recommend The Royal Hawaiian to anyone who appreciates service and luxury at its finest!

Room Tip: All room have been recently renovated.

stayed at the maluhia suite with the wife and 2 kids. it's a suite with 2 bedrooms (a king and 2 double beds) and a side sitting room. it was great to walk out to a ocean view every morning. the kids ate free at breakfast (option of french toast, eggs and bacon, pancakes, etc., plus freshly squeezed juices or milk). the free continental breakfast for adults (for spg platinum members) was also nice. i wouldn't stay anywhere else in waikiki.
