“Beautiful beach, lovely hotel”
Reviewed August 27, 2014

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. So glad we stayed here rather than Waikiki as it was it was so much nicer to have such a beautiful beach all to ourselves.
Breakfast was very good, the kids loved the smoothies and their personalised cookies on our first night were a real treat.
The rooms were luxurious with lots of space. The beds were comfortable but quite a small queen size. We were a family of four in the room and found the beds a bit of a squeeze.
The courtesy bus was vey good but we would have liked it to be a little more frequent as we didn't have a car.
We only tried the Italian restaurant, the staff were very friendly and the food was good but rather pricey considering it was actually just pizza.
Would happily stay again

To relax, I chose this hotel.
I booked the room of Kahara Tower. I could the sea very well and I felt the earth is round. SPA and Italian restaurant were also excellent. I think it is the best place in Hawaii to relax.

We celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary. Kahala Hotel treated us almost like royalty. Champaine and dessert in our room when we walked in, very comfortable bed, and amazing bathroom/shower. Service was pretty much impeccable. The staff is very attentive. Will go back again. It's only 5 minutes away from our house.

Kahala was a wonderful place to stay! I'll break down the review into sections:

1. Checkin: Very prompt and fast. No issues with requested rooms.

2. Rooms: There are different types of rooms, as the hotel will describe to you. I stayed in two different rooms, and one was not the ocean view side but I think that both sides are equally gorgeous and tranquil and great. The hotel is quite old, but the rooms themselves are clean, updated and most importantly, CLEAN!!! It doesn't smell or look old and everything is tastefully done.

3. The Grounds: The location of Kahala Resort is perfect because it has a secluded beach that is sort of a crescent so that the waves are not strong and the beach itself is not crowded. The hotel covers a large area and within the property is a "dolphin lagoon" where they keep dolphins. This is the only downside to this hotel. I am sure people will be excited to see these dolphins but the fact that this lagoon is so small and dolphins are known to swim hundreds of miles each day with their pod, and the lagoon is basically a pool is unfortunate. I know that Kahala is "partnered" with the dolphin program and the resort themselves do not run this so I would expect their response to be that they will " pass this information to the organizers", but that's really not my point. Those dolphins are trapped much like the way we would feel if we only have our ensuite to live in for the entirety of our life and I am sorry to see that such a gorgeous resort supports this, regardless of how well they are "treated" and fed and etc.

4. The Staff: Everyone is very helpful, from checkin to concierge and beach staff.

5. Proximity to Waikiki: Although this hotel is separated from the "centre" of Waikiki, it is only a 10 minute drive to the centre and the resorts location in respect to beach and quietness cannot be beat . It is worth the drive each day/night you want to go into town, and you are much better off staying at this location rather than fighting the crowd in Waikiki. The atmosphere is much more tranquil. Taking a cab would be approximately $30/ one way.

6. Food: I'm sorry but I didn't eat at the hotel so I cannot make any comments, but the breakfast buffet is always busy and the spread looks great. They have morning coffees setup in the lower lobby and also by the breakfast buffet section that is complimentary each morning and that was excellent coffee! They do have several restaurants on site.

I hope you all enjoy your stay at Kahala; it is a wonderful resort.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great, so it depends on how much you want to spend. The rooms right on the water...

Aloha Caesar and Chloe,

Thank you for the kind comments and for taking the time to share your experiences with the Trip Advisor community. We are delighted to hear that you had an exceptional stay and received outstanding services and amenities at every level. Beyond doubt, the resort’s uncrowded beach location and 10 minutes proximity to vibrant Waikiki are two of the most favorite aspects when staying at The Kahala. The Kahala guest truly has the best of both worlds. We take all feedback very seriously and have shared your comments with Dolphin Quest partners. The resort has a great relationship with our Dolphin Quest team. We believe the Atlantic Bottlenose dolphins are in excellent human care provided by our partners.

We look forward to our next opportunity to welcome you back to The Kahala Hotel & Resort for your next Hawaii vacation.

best service staff ever - delicious, eye popping food - nightly, very classy music & dancing - wonderful room with the most comfortable bed - a totally gorgeous, swimmable beach with a dock to enjoy; probably what Hawaii was like back in the '60s when it wasn't so crowded - all the lovely amenities one would expect @ a luxury resort - oh yes, we would love to return to the kahala! :)

I'm not sure if the recent sale of the hotel had any impact on the property, but some things worth noting. We last stayed at the Kahala 9 years ago when it was the Mandarin. Here are some positives and negatives that overall kept this from getting an excellent review from me.

Positives: great beach and property, quiet away from the hectic Waikiki scene, rooms that are large and up to date, good breakfast buffet choices and the assistant front desk mgr Sahng who really went out of his way to accommodate us..

Negatives: shuttle service to Waikiki (runs infrequently/needs a reservation), check in (when we booked, I requested connecting rooms since traveling with children and I called and confirmed that we had connecting rooms the day before arriving only to be told on arrival that it was not available), mixed experience with staff (Marc in Concierge was great but another concierge told us on arrival after an 11 hour trip with kids that there were no restaurants open at 4:30pm so sent us on a taxi ride to a mall yet later we learned that the pool restaurant was open until 5:15pm), long lines for breakfast buffet even though there were plenty of tables open, no airconditioning in some of the halls.

Overall, you stay here for relaxation and the beach and that's 5 stars, but these other issues really detract from the experience.

Room Tip: higher floors are better for the view.

I stayed at this hotel for seven nights and what a surprise. Ever room is large the only difference was if they had a balcony and a beach view. The rooms are unbelieveable. The bedroom is very large with a couch and table and desk. There is a very large bathroom with wash basins up each end double hanging space and separate toilet and large shower. The rooms are very well kept and the best beds very comfy. It was fully booked on our arrival so had to wait up to 4 hours for our room as the first one we where offered was a long way from the main building but the second was on the 7th floor without a balcony as we couldn't upgrade, would prefer balcony as felt hemmed in not being able to open a window. the buffet breakfast was great, the best pineapple I have tasted. The pool area is getting very tired and not bigger enough. Not a lot of shade and lounges and umbrellas need replacing. The beach is great
very clear and safe for swimming. The Dolphins are a great attraction to have on site. You can watch them all day and still see something different and the staff are great and will answer any questions who have. They run a free shuttle bus to the local mall, Waikiki and Al Mona through out the day and you can go in for dinner if you want to. The only downside is if you don't have a car you are isolated from eating at local restaurants. This hotel is very professionally run with very friendly staff. This is a very popular with Japanese visitors who are very polite and trouble free tourists. Great place for children.

Room Tip: Rooms with a balcony are a better choice
