“Didn't want to leave!”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

What a wonderful hotel!

We took our teenagers to the Kahala for the first leg of a Hawaii trip. We hadn't been there before, but we had heard great things about it. We were not disappointed. Every aspect of our stay was spectacular. Check in was quick and easy. The rooms (we had adjoining suites) were wonderful. Spectacular service. Great food. Nice beach. The hotel was at capacity, but we never waited for anything.

There are not enough superlatives to describe this property. It is not inexpensive, but as Hawaii hotels go, you get a decent bang for your buck.

One thing we had to adjust to was hanging out with the celebrities. "Hey look . . . there's Matt Damon!" Doesn't happen to us very often in Kansas.

A hotel unlike any other. Upon arrival was treated like royalty. Wonderful staff--very attentive. Food was out of this world. Best sushi ever! Mango chutney a must on anything but particularly the burger! Hammocks outside were so relaxing and the pools, watching the dolphins were amazing! The rooms overlook the ocean and sleeping with the balcony doors open was like heaven. An absolute must stay when on Honolulu! Romantic sunrise--simply outstanding!

Room Tip: Overlooking the dolphin lagoon was perfect for dolphin watching and sunrise

Our first time to Hawaii. Lovely setting, staff and facilities. Interesting to people watch the families, frequent onsite weddings and other guests. Obviously a popular Japanese destination.
Families with children are not intrusive. Breakfast buffet overlooking ocean is great start to the day. Easy access with car to sights of Honolulu and Oahu while avoiding the overdense Waikiki experience for those over 30. Management should give some thought to line up for table for breakfast and the pleasant but disorganized servers on the evening Veranda.
Philosophically, I think Kahala should get out of aquarium and dolphin business. Would we recommend Kahala to others ? Yes - an upscale resort you will enjoy.

Traveling alone with a child overseas can be a challenge. However, The Kahala is an excellent respite and a stress reliever.

We checked in to an Oceanfront room and quickly changed to a suite- some Ocean front rooms do not have a patio and we covet outdoor space.

We used 24hr room service which was prompt ordering things from Hoku's menu which was nice since my child fell asleep and I could not go out to dinner.

Breakfast buffet was lovely and has a wonderful assortment.

My suite had a view of coco head and diamond head- gorgeous!

Bathrooms need new tile and fixtures to compete with Four Seasons hotels.

Lobby lighting and glasswork is gorgeous but flooring needs to be updated. Not enough flowers in entry and checking area. Needs updating.

Some rooms are carpeted and attractive. Some need new wallpaper seaming.

Some rooms have excellent upgrades. Some do need refurbishing.

Beach is perfect for children.

Pool is rather small and needs upgrading- larger new tiles more depth- expanse.

Guests are a wonderful mix of International and Americans. The hotel has a fabulous history and patronage.

We will stay here again and again.

Thank you, Kahala!

Thank you for taking the time to share your resort experience with us following your recent stay. There can be some challenges traveling with a youngster, and I was pleased to learn that my staff ensured that you both had an enjoyable and comfortable stay. All of your comments have been noted and I always appreciate receiving feedback from a guest. As far as the condition of your room is concerned, we do repair bathroom floors when chipped tile or another issue is reported. Our rooms were completely renovated in 2009 and are being continually refreshed such as the addition of new Tommy Bahama bath amenities and complimentary Wi-Fi Internet Service. Upgrades to public spaces are ongoing and recently included the total remodel of The Veranda lounge with new flooring, comfy Tommy Bahama Royal Kahala collection furnishings, as well as a new menu. As the hotel approaches its 50th anniversary, we strive to maintain and improve all areas for our guests including the refurbishment of Hoku's, lobby areas, and corridors. It was a pleasure having you with us, and we look forward to being of service to you again on many future occasions. Aloha and best regards.

I was in this property for a business meeting. However, considering it was Hawaii, I alway try to make time for the beach. The hotel is nice and comfortable. The room is big and the bed is perfect. The beach is nice, but the pool is small. They have a dolphin lagoon right beside the pool. I took a dip on the beach one afternoon, but noticed that as you go a few meters away from the beach towards the sea, the nice sand on your feet turns to mud. And this seems to go all the way out to the sea. Over-all the facilities are nice, the staff are friendly and helpful. But all of this comes with a price.

Room Tip: the higher the floor, the better

Our stay at the Kahala was amazing. Expect to be welcomed and pampered as you enjoy your stay at this resort. The food is delicious, the service is excellent and the location is stunning. You will never want to leave. The people who work at the resort are warm, funny and charming. Any question you have is answered about the island, places to visit or even the shopping. It was our first time to Hawaii and we cannot imagine going anywhere else. It is just far away from the busyness of Waikiki and yet close enough to other sites. The beach is secluded with a beautiful view. If you like you can rent cabanas or just lay on sun chairs. Either way, your stay at the beach is complete.

Room Tip: We chose the dolphin lanai. It faces the lagoon and yet is just a staircase away from the ocean.

I love that the Kahala has consistency in their rooms. And through the on line booking tool, visitors can easily ensure they can exactly the room they want and at the rate the visitor wants to pay.

I always book the ocean facing rooms/suites and love the sun light and wave sounds. The yellow walls and white bedding create a true area of relaxation. The king size bed is super luxurious. An elegant ceiling fan allows one just the right amount of island air circulation. The large bath with separate shower and tub are spacious and I enjoy the additional drawers and shelving space in the bathrooms. The robes and slippers are nice to use during your stay.

I was surprised by the rather large amount of children at the resort in mid-March. (Parents, please do not allow your children to run up and down the halls at any time of the day yelling to their heart's content. Many guests try to enjoy peace and quiet in their rooms,) I was watching several of the Academy Award nominated films as I waited for the winds to calm down a bit.

High winds thwarted our beach visit this week. If you are beach walkers, wear shoes as the hotel's beach is rather short, but a walk can easily be extended around the area, if one wears flip flops or sneakers.

While not the most accommodating staff, the room attendants are pure delights. They are always so helpful and want to make sure everything in your room is perfect. I did not have the chance to visit the spa on this most recent trip, but I have had some of the most amazing massages at the Kahala Spa. Highly recommend the Spa and the massage services offered. I did want to mention that the Bell Staff is usually helpful. Our front desk reception and check in was handled very professionally by Ralph. We did request an additional room up check in, and I think we may have thrown him a curve ball, but he handled the requests like a pro.

The food available around the pool and on the beach is typical beach fare. Fish tacos, ask for a corn tortilla or you will receive a flour tortilla. The nachos are pretty good, but ask for a side of guacamole and pico de gallo. The hot dog is served on a long roll, not a bun, so be prepared.

In my room, 409, I could hear a guest in another room taking a bath and each time another guest in a close by room closed their door, I thought it was very loud. The sounds outside the room were very much a part of my room. Not mentioning the kids running up and down the halls, ringing door bells and using their outdoor voices. Perhaps some sound dampening measures can be taken.

I like that the Kahala is not on Waikiki, but if it is morphing into a year round family destination and children will be running around as if they are at a Disney resort or a Marriott, i may have to return to the Halekulani.

Thank you for taking time to share your resort experience following your most recent stay. I was pleased to see that you had a good time and were very comfortable in your guest room. Your positive feedback about our spa services and our Housekeeping and Bell staff is certainly appreciated, however, your other comments were also noted. Any disturbance caused by noisy youngsters is regrettable, and I am sorry for any inconvenience in that regard. Families are always welcome at our resort, and they usually book more frequently over any holiday weekend or school break period. Thank you for your suggestion to look into possible sound-dampening measures. Again, it was thoughtful of you to take the time to write and we appreciate your continued patronage. My staff and I are looking forward to your next visit. Aloha and best wishes.
