“Very nice stay, but not perfect”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

This was our third or fourth stay at the Kahala Hotel and Resort (through their various operators). We were there for five nights right after New Year's. The staff is superb - super friendly. The location is great as you are well away from the density of Waikiki. (in my mind there are really only two hotels to consider in Honolulu - either the Halekulani in Waikiki or the Kahala Hotel - but you pay for the service and luxury). Unfortunately the Kahala Hotel does not seem to be quite the luxurious experience it used to be. The rooms are a bit dated and the attention to detail is lacking. For example, bottled water is only sparingly offered in the rooms. They only have single sinks in the bathrooms -not a big deal, but not what you expect in a "five-star" hotel. While we had a room on the 10th floor with ocean view, the lanai was not particularly clean and I was uncomfortable going out in my bare feet. The dining room for breakfast (the Plumeria Beach House) is beautifully situated, but it is a challenge negotiating the enormous breakfast buffet which is their standard fare. It is far from a unique experience and we found the crowd for breakfast to be uncomfortable - there seemed to be some large tour groups there while we were there. We also had dinner at Hoku's which was ok, but not particularly memorable. You pay a lot for this hotel and, while it is nice to be away from Waikiki, the Halekulani provides a more memorable experience. As a final note, while I understand the dolphins are well cared for and have full time attention, it is bizarre to see people in the pools with them, holding on to them to have pictures taken. They are beautiful creatures and it is strange to see them cooped up in the rather small pools. And having people in there swimming with them when they are supposed to be wild creatures.

Room Tip: Lanai rooms cost more but it is an advantage to open the sliders and enjoy the outdoors. The mounta...

Thank you for staying with us again during your recent trip to Honolulu, and thank you for highlighting the exceptional service provided by our staff. I appreciate receiving your input regarding your room and some rare inconsistencies in our housekeeping services. I am reviewing procedures with that department and will continue to work to improve the guest experience in that regard. All of your issues have been noted and your comments shared with the respective department heads for their information and follow up. You are correct that our resident dolphins are well cared for. The unique educational hands-on programs are very popular with all age groups. Please be assured that their health and welfare are among our highest priorities, and it is a team of experts that lovingly cares for the marine animals. Again, thank you for returning to our resort and for sharing your concerns along with your kind words. It will be our pleasure to be of service to you again the next time you visit Honolulu. Aloha and best wishes.

My husband and I have been staying at the Kahala for years and absolutely love it. It is home to us. The people are wonderful and treat us so nicely. The food is delicious, especially at Hoku's where Dante and his staff rock! They're the best! Also love the spa and the dolphins. Actually, we love it all and can't say enough good things about it.

Our stay was unexpected and unplanned. After 10 days in Waikiki we needed an oasis of rest and relaxation!. We stayed at the Kahala 2 times before and yearned for this resort of hawaiiana , pamper, and luxury. Fortunately they had availability, only one choice but we were elated just to stay there again. We celebrated our anniversary and found to our surprise a bottle of champagne and fruit snacks. Thank you so much for keeping hospitality in high standards and not changing much with the new owners. (We do miss the DimSum lunch buffets)

Room Tip: mountain room with lanai the best value with great view of mountain and ocean and yes- higher floors...

My family just came back from 5 nights at Kahala Resort. We were in heaven the whole time. From walking into the lobby area to seeing our gorgeous room and view on the balcony we were smiling from ear to ear. The entire staff is so friendly and helpful. Michal and Tatyianna at the High Tea were absolute dolls. Breakfast was delicious and lunch at the Seaside Cafe was beautiful. My daughter along with 3 other women in our group did a paddle board yoga class at sunset and they had so much fun. It was nice to be close enough to Waikiki yet in our own little world at The Kahala.

My family and I vacationed at the Kahala Hotel and Resort for a week long stay and didn't ever want to leave. The location and service were second to none. The staff was incredible, addressing you by name and catering to your every need. This is a must stay and is very family friendly. I have two children ages 10 and 12 and they keep asking me when we can go back. The food was a bit expensive, but so is everything else in Hawaii so don't be shocked when your breakfast bill arrives and it is over $100, it is worth every penny!

Room Tip: If you can, choose a room on the higher levels for a better view. Just about every room has a parti...

Had a lovely lunch here with family. Service and food was wonderful and the view and beach lovely ideal for those holiday photos. The turtles and dolphin show was a surprise bonus and you can swim with the dolphins if you would like with very friendly staff. All in all i would recommend this as a must visit if in honolulu.

Kahala is one of the few places I've been to where I feel like home. The staffs there are so friendly and helpful all the way from the valet to the manger. Even my hard to satified Chinese elite friends are having such an amazing time while staying there with fabulous dinning experience, swimming with the dophines, and chilling on the cananas on the beach. I also love the personal tough they do at the kahala, such as making noodles for chinese birthday celebration!
