If you're a Japanese tourist who likes to disco dance at your dinner table, this is the place for you. We got a very weak Mai-Tai, a small sirloin steak and cold crab legs, all while being serenaded by an old hippy guitarist and his lady friend playing gawd-awful renditions of pop tunes. We then went on deck to watch sunset, saw a few whales spouting, then the tackiest of shows in Hawaii began. There were some cute and skillful Hawaiian dancers, but they soon left and disco started. The Japanese seemed to love it, but I was wondering if I could swim back to shore by then. Painfully lame!!! An entire evening gone for this?

A much better idea is to first rent a charter boat with a knowledgeable captain or hop on a whale watching tour and then upon returning, have a really good meal on shore.

It looks like morning cruises have more luck in seeing whales, because we went for lunch trip and we didn't see any. Yes, we were offered to go again, but we didn't want to spend another 2 hours on a same boat with very average service and bellow average food (don't take lunch when booking this cruise, not worthy) with bunch of bored people walking around ship to kill some time.

We decided on a last minute whim to try the Star of Honolulu's Whale watching excursion, because the Whale watching trip we had scheduled in Kauai was cancelled due to high surf. First, I was excited about the price, it was no where near as expensive as most whale watching excursions, although being a big ship, there was no snorkeling and sight seeing either. The lunch buffet was pretty expansive and for $16 extra dollars...you probably wouldn't find a better bargain for a lunch buffet on Oahu.
The whale watching was good. We did see a mom and calf humpback whale while out on the south side of the island, but the visibility wasn't too great that day, and there were no big breaches or pec slaps...anything of that nature.
The ship does seem a bit dated, and some of the activities they have on board are a bit stereotypical of a dated hawaiian excursion, such as lei making, ukulele lessons, etc...
Overall, I thought it was a pretty good value and we did get to see whales, the most important part. The staff was friendly and the captains were knowledgable about the whales.

We did the whale watching early morning cruise with breakfast. Everyone was friendly, they guarantee a whale sighting or you get a voucher to return for free, we saw a family of whales the first ten minutes in.

The whole thing felt like it has been going on way to long. Even some of the staff said to me that they do it night after night and its just whatever. Our waitress was overworked, hardly ever came to out table to see if we needed anything. We were always the last to be served our food . Had to go to the bar ourselves to get drinks. Nice boat, good views, the food was good. I wouldn't do it again unless someone else aid for it. One other thing, if you pay extra, you can get a window seat and get your picture taken..I just wish they would look at the picture before they give it too you. I looked stoned. Wasn't too happy about that. Won't be long and they will start to have less customers with the rushed attitude they have. But we thought the entertainment was ok. Go at your own risk.
